The Trump T1 smartphone, originally marketed with claims of being made in America, has been found to be nearly identical to the existing HTC U24 Pro model, according to a teardown analysis by iFixit. The technology repair and diagnostics company obtained a Trump T1 unit from NBC News and conducted a detailed examination, comparing it to the HTC device.
Internal Similarities
Initial observations noted the striking resemblance between the Trump T1 and the HTC U24 Pro. iFixit utilized a CT scanner to compare the two devices before disassembly, finding them to be almost indistinguishable in their scanned appearance. Upon opening the Trump T1, iFixit confirmed that the core internal components, including the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, are the same as those found in the HTC U24 Pro.
The teardown revealed that while the overall hardware is fundamentally the same, there are a few key differences. The Trump T1 features a slightly larger battery compared to its HTC counterpart. Additionally, the pattern of the speaker holes differs, and the camera flash is positioned slightly differently due to a longer flex cable. While the main storage and RAM in the T1 are supplied by Micron, the HTC U24 Pro uses components from SK Hynix. Despite these minor variations, the similarity is so pronounced that iFixit successfully operated the HTC board within the T1’s body without issues.
Manufacturing Questions
The analysis also touches upon the manufacturing origins of the Trump T1. The phone was initially promoted as being made in America, a detail that was later removed from its website. The packaging for the T1 states “proudly assembled in the USA.” iFixit suggests that Trump Mobile might be importing pre-assembled chassis and display units and then adding the remaining components in the United States, a practice that aligns with the “assembled in the USA” claim.
Trump Mobile did not respond to requests for comment regarding the findings.
