Insta360 Enters Gimbal Camera Market with Luna Ultra

Insta360 has entered the gimbal camera market with the launch of its Luna Ultra, a device that combines dual cameras, 3x optical zoom, and 8K video recording. This release directly challenges DJI’s established presence in the handheld vlogging camera category.

The Luna Ultra is equipped to shoot video at up to 8K resolution at 30 frames per second, or 4K at 120 frames per second, with support for Dolby Vision. The camera features 47GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card, and a 1,550mAh battery offering approximately four hours of recording time. Its dual-camera system includes a primary lens with a 1-inch sensor and a 20mm f1.8 aperture, paired with a 60mm telephoto lens featuring a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f2.0 aperture. This setup provides 3x true optical zoom, 6x lossless in-sensor zoom, and 12x digital zoom.

Detachable Display and Zoom Capabilities

A notable feature of the Luna Ultra is its detachable front panel, which functions as a wireless display for remote control and framing from over 60 feet away. This display also incorporates a microphone, allowing for stand-up recordings without an external audio device. While the integrated audio is considered acceptable, a dedicated microphone may still be preferred for higher-quality sound.

The optical zoom capability is highlighted as a key advantage over competitors like DJI’s Osmo Pocket, which offers in-sensor zoom. The Luna Ultra’s 3x optical zoom provides greater flexibility, and the 6x in-sensor zoom is reported to maintain sharpness in most conditions. Digital zoom up to 12x is also available, though it can result in a noticeable decrease in image quality in less than ideal lighting.

Users can switch between whole stop zoom increments (1x, 2x, 3x, 6x, 12x) or use a smooth zoom slider for precise framing. The transition between the primary and telephoto lenses can sometimes be observed through slight shifts in foreground objects or sky color due to differences in aperture and sensor size, particularly when zooming between 2.9x and 3.1x.

In-Use Experience and Image Quality

In terms of user experience, the Luna Ultra shares similarities with DJI’s Osmo Pocket, including its menu system and screen activation. However, the Insta360 device is described as noticeably larger, with a wider gimbal head that impacts its pocketability. The camera comes with a protective case that further increases its bulk.

Image quality is characterized as bright and slightly saturated, with an option for adjustment in “Pro” mode for flatter or more cinematic looks. Dolby Vision support is present, though it can sometimes lead to oversaturated areas in bright light, requiring experimentation. The camera also offers I-Log color mode for advanced color grading and Leica-developed color filters for quick stylistic additions.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is priced at $770, positioning it as a premium option in the market. Its launch signals significant competition for DJI, with the upcoming Osmo Pocket 4P also rumored to feature similar advanced capabilities.
