In the world of employment, the United States President Donald Trump has decided to take a bold step and has announced mass layoffs<\/a> in his own cabinet divisions. The federal government, spearheaded by Trump has decided to start by firing over 1350 workers from the State Department.<\/p>\n

This unexpected and sudden shake-up of the diplomatic corps has clearly gone too well with the employees, amidst reports of civil workers also being laid off across different industries.<\/p>\n

The State Department began firing U.S.-based employees on Friday, July 11 as the administration of President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0pressed ahead with an unprecedented overhaul of its diplomatic corps. This unanticipated move, as per the critics will undermine U.S. ability to defend and promote U.S. interests abroad. The layoffs are expected to affect 1over 1100 civil service and 246 foreign service officers based in the United States, especially at a time when the capital, Washington is grappling with multiple crises on the world stage – Russia’s war in Ukraine, the almost two-year-long Gaza conflict, and the Middle East on edge due to high tension between Israel and Iran.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The Department is streamlining domestic operations to focus on diplomatic priorities<\/em>,” an internal State Department notice that was sent to the workforce said. “Headcount reductions have been carefully tailored to affect non-core functions, duplicative or redundant offices, and offices where considerable efficiencies may be found<\/em>,” it added.<\/p>\n

The total reduction in the workforce will be nearly 3,000, including the voluntary departures, according to the notice and a senior State Department official, out of the 18,000 employees based in the United States.<\/p>\n

The move is the first step in the long series of strategies planned to restructure the country, that President Trump<\/a> has sought to ensure U.S. foreign policy is aligned with his “America First<\/em><\/strong>” agenda. Former diplomats and critics say the firing of foreign service officers\u2019 risks America’s ability to counter the growing assertiveness from adversaries such as China and Russia.<\/p>\n

“President Trump<\/a> and Secretary of State Rubio are once again making America less safe and less secure<\/em>,” Democratic senator Tim Kaine from Virginia said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“This is one of the most ridiculous decisions that could possibly be made at a time when China is increasing its diplomatic footprint around the world and establishing an overseas network of military and transportation bases, Russia is continuing its years-long brutal assault of a sovereign country, and the Middle East is careening from crisis to crisis,” Kaine said.<\/p>\n

Several offices were set up inside the building for employees who are being laid off to turn in their badges, laptops, telephones and other property owned by the agency. Many members of a State Department office overseeing the U.S. resettlement of Afghans who worked for the U.S. government during the 20-year war have also been terminated as part of the overhaul.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
