The alarming trend highlights the growing influence of ultra-processed foods and aggressive marketing practices, which are replacing healthier options such as fruits, vegetables, and proteins in children’s diets.

Childhood Obesity at Record Levels

UNICEF’s report “Feeding Profit: How Food Environments are Failing Children” reveals that nearly one in 10 children and teenagers aged five to 19 is living with obesity, marking a historic turning point in global nutrition trends. For the first time, obesity prevalence among youths has surpassed that of underweight.

In 2022, data from 190 countries showed that 391 million children were overweight, more than double the number recorded in 2000. Even more concerning, 163 million children (8%) were obese in 2022, compared to just 3% at the start of the century. This surge has made obesity one of the leading threats to children’s long-term health, increasing their risk of diabetes, certain cancers, anxiety, and depression.

By contrast, the percentage of underweight youths has steadily declined from 13% in 2000 to 10% in 2022. UNICEF notes that while the fight against hunger is showing progress, rising obesity levels are creating a new global health crisis.

Why Obesity is Rising Among Children

The UNICEF report points to unethical food industry practices rather than individual family choices as the primary driver of this epidemic. Children are constantly exposed to marketing of sugary drinks, salty snacks, and junk foods, especially in schools. These products are often cheaper and more accessible than healthier alternatives, making them an attractive but harmful choice for families.

“Ultra-processed food is increasingly replacing fruits, vegetables, and protein at a time when nutrition plays a critical role in children’s growth, cognitive development, and mental health,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell explained.

The problem is no longer confined to wealthy nations. Historically, obesity rates were higher in developed countries such as the United States, where 21% of youths are overweight, and Chile, where the rate is 27%. But since 2000, obesity has risen sharply in low- and middle-income nations. Pacific Island countries, for example, face soaring obesity rates as imports of cheap processed foods replace traditional diets.

This dual burden of malnutrition—where undernutrition and obesity coexist—is now a harsh reality for many nations.

UNICEF’s Call for Urgent Action

UNICEF emphasizes that the responsibility for addressing this crisis lies with governments and societies, not just families. The agency is calling for binding measures to create healthier food environments for children, including:

Stricter regulations on junk food marketing targeting children

Taxes on sugary drinks and unhealthy foods

Policies to promote affordable access to fresh produce

Stronger support for traditional diets in regions affected by imported ultra-processed foods

UNICEF stresses that without decisive action, millions of children will face lifelong health challenges fueled by poor diets and predatory food industry practices.

A Turning Point in Global Nutrition

With obesity now surpassing underweight for the first time among children and teenagers, UNICEF warns that the world is at a critical crossroads.
