This verdict marks the largest award ever given to a single plaintiff<\/strong> in the company\u2019s 15-year-long talc powder litigation battle.<\/em><\/h2>\n

A California jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson (J&J)<\/strong> to pay $966 million (approx. 96.6 crore rupees)<\/strong>\u00a0to the family of Mae Moore<\/strong>, an 88-year-old woman who died from mesothelioma<\/strong><\/em>, a rare cancer varietal.<\/p>\n

Historic Verdict in Talc Powder Lawsuit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Los Angeles state court jury ruled that J&J was liable for Moore\u2019s cancer, awarding $16 million in compensatory damages and an additional $950 million in punitive damages<\/em><\/strong>. Moore had used Johnson & Johnson\u2019s baby powder and Shower-to-Shower talc products daily for nearly 80 years. Her family alleged that the company knowingly concealed the potential health risks of its talc-based powders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pleased the jury concluded J&J should be held accountable<\/em>,\u201d said Jessica Dean, a Texas-based attorney representing Moore\u2019s family. \u201cIt took this family five years to get their day in court.\u201d<\/p>\n

J&J Plans to Appeal the Ruling<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In response, Erik Haas, J&J\u2019s Worldwide Vice President of Litigation, called the verdict ‘egregious and unconstitutional’<\/em>, confirming that the company will immediately appeal the decision. Haas added that the ruling contradicts the outcomes of most other talc-related cases in which J&J has prevailed.<\/p>\n

Talc Controversy and Ongoing Lawsuits<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The verdict comes as J&J braces for a new wave of jury trials related to its talc-based baby powder, which was withdrawn from the global market in 2023<\/em><\/strong>. The company has already spent over $3 billion settling lawsuits that claimed ‘asbestos’<\/em> <\/strong>in its talc products caused cancer. However, J&J still faces more than 70,000 pending lawsuits alleging that its products caused mesothelioma and ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n
