The strong act of levying a 50% tariff on Indian goods, has now made US changemakers to force the incumbent President Trump to assess the worrying situation.<\/em><\/h2>\n

In a strong appeal to the White House,<\/a> a bipartisan group of 21 US lawmakers has urged President Donald Trump<\/a> to reverse the recent tariff hikes on Indian goods, warning that the move has strained Washington\u2019s strategic and economic partnership with New Delhi. The letter, dated October 8 and led by Congresswoman Deborah Ross and Congressman Ro Khanna, called on the President to take immediate steps to \u201creset and repair<\/em>\u201d America\u2019s relationship with India.<\/p>\n

The lawmakers expressed deep concern over the administration\u2019s decision to increase tariffs on Indian imports to as high as 50%,<\/em> describing it as a ‘punitive measure’ that has hurt both American consumers and manufacturers. They said the higher duties have disrupted vital trade channels, raised prices, and damaged supply chains that US industries rely on for essential materials.<\/p>\n

According to the letter, the Trump administration<\/a> imposed a 25 per cent \u201creciprocal\u201d tariff earlier this year, followed by an additional 25 per cent duty in late August 2025, reportedly in response to India\u2019s continued energy purchases from Russia. Lawmakers said these moves had \u201cstrained relations with the world\u2019s largest democracy<\/em>,\u201d warning that prolonged escalation could weaken one of America\u2019s most important global partnerships.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia is a crucial trading partner for the United States<\/a>,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cFrom semiconductors to healthcare and energy, American manufacturers depend on Indian inputs to sustain production and innovation<\/em>.\u201d They also noted that American investments in India provide access to one of the world\u2019s fastest-growing consumer markets, while Indian companies investing in the US have generated thousands of jobs and strengthened local economies.<\/p>\n

The letter warned that the tariff dispute could push India closer to China and Russia, undermining the shared strategic objectives of both democracies. India plays a key role as a stabilizing force in the Indo-Pacific and as a member of the Quad alliance. \u201cAlienating New Delhi at this juncture would only weaken our collective ability to counter China\u2019s growing influence in the region<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reaffirming the importance of the US\u2013India partnership, the lawmakers highlighted shared democratic values, mutual respect, and a joint commitment to global stability. \u201cThe US\u2013India relationship<\/a> stands out for its dedication to freedom, openness, and cooperation<\/em>,\u201d the letter said. \u201cStrategically, economically, and reputationally, this partnership is indispensable<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

They concluded by urging the President to reconsider the tariff policy and pursue constructive engagement with India. \u201cRolling back these tariffs and strengthening dialogue will not only benefit our economies but also reinforce America\u2019s leadership<\/a> and credibility in the Indo-Pacific region,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
