Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/strong> on October 23 described the latest US sanctions targeting Russia\u2019s two largest oil producers\u2014Rosneft and Lukoil – <\/strong><\/em>as ‘serious <\/strong><\/em>but\u00a0insisted that they would not deal a major blow to the country\u2019s economy. T<\/em><\/p>\n

The new measures mark the first round of sanctions imposed on Russia since US President Donald Trump<\/a> returned to office.\u00a0Speaking to reporters, Putin said the sanctions were \u201can unfriendly act\u201d that would have some consequences but would not undermine Russia\u2019s overall economic stability. \u201cThey are serious for us, of course, that is clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact our economic well-being<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Putin also criticized Washington\u2019s approach<\/a>, noting that the move would not help rebuild bilateral relations. \u201cThis is an unfriendly act that does not strengthen Russia-US relations, which have only just begun to recover<\/em>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

US and EU’s Pressure on Moscow<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The United States announced sanctions<\/a> on Rosneft and Lukoil, citing Russia\u2019s continued military operations in Ukraine and the Kremlin\u2019s refusal to agree to a ceasefire. The European Union followed suit on Thursday, unveiling an expanded package of economic sanctions aimed at curbing the financial flows sustaining Moscow\u2019s war efforts.<\/p>\n

According to reports from Reuters, major Chinese<\/em> state-owned oil companies<\/a> have<\/strong> suspended purchases of seaborne Russian crude <\/strong><\/em>following Washington\u2019s latest measures against Rosneft and Lukoil. Meanwhile, India\u2014currently the largest buyer of seaborne Russian oil\u2014is expected to sharply cut its imports<\/a> to comply with the sanctions.<\/p>\n
