A peculiar ‘cold blob’ of ocean and air in the North Atlantic, south of Greenland, is cooling while the rest of the planet warms, and new research suggests this anomaly is a sign of an imminent and serious climate problem.<\/p>\n
An international team of scientists, utilizing satellite data, reanalysis records, and ocean heat content data dating back to 1955, has concluded that the cooling in this region is driven by a decrease in heat being transported into the area by ocean currents, rather than increased heat loss from the surface.<\/p>\n
This finding supports the theory that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vast system of ocean currents acting like a conveyor belt, is weakening. The researchers assert that this weakening is bringing the AMOC closer to a dangerous tipping point, a scenario predicted to have severe global consequences.<\/p>\n
“Given the well-established existence of a tipping point of the AMOC, as well as recent studies finding a range of different ‘early warning signals’ of the ocean circulation approaching such a tipping point, the strong evidence for a weakening AMOC is a serious concern for society and policy,” the researchers stated in their published paper.<\/p>\n
Their analysis indicates that surface heat loss in the area has actually decreased, contradicting earlier hypotheses. The study emphasizes that multidecadal heat content variations are more closely linked to ocean heat transport than to surface heat flux variability. Scientists broadly agree that the AMOC is inching closer to a tipping point, with models suggesting it will eventually disappear. The delicate balance that keeps the AMOC functioning is being disrupted by rising ocean temperatures and the influx of freshwater from melting glaciers.<\/p>\n
The potential shutdown of the AMOC could lead to significantly colder winters in Europe, alongside widespread changes in global weather patterns, ecosystems, and food security. “While large uncertainty remains over how close the Earth is to this tipping point, standard CMIP6 simulations of future global warming scenarios suggest it is crossed in a substantial subset of these model simulations around the middle of this century,” the researchers noted.<\/p>\n
Direct monitoring of the AMOC has only been in place since 2004, providing a limited record for assessing its long-term trajectory. However, climate models, such as those in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), can help predict the potential impacts of an AMOC stall.<\/p>\n
