The Dragon spacecraft is set to undock from the forward port of the ISS’s Harmony module at approximately 12:05 p.m. EDT, following a command from SpaceX ground controllers. After safely maneuvering away from the orbiting complex using its thrusters, the spacecraft will reenter Earth’s atmosphere on Wednesday, June 17. A splashdown is anticipated off the coast of California at approximately 5:08 a.m. PDT. While NASA will not stream the splashdown event, updates will be provided on its space station blog.<\/p>\n
NASA will offer live coverage of the undocking beginning at 11:45 a.m. EDT. The broadcast will be available on NASA+, Amazon Prime, and the agency’s YouTube channel, with additional viewing options on various online platforms and social media.<\/p>\n
The Dragon spacecraft is returning with nearly 6,500 pounds of cargo, comprising crew supplies and science experiments. Among the returning research are samples that could influence future space exploration and life on Earth. These include bioprinted organ and cartilage tissue, data aimed at improving cryogenic fuel storage for future space missions, and DNA-inspired materials being developed for new cancer treatments.<\/p>\n
Hardware also returning to Earth includes an ocular imaging device used to monitor the eye health of crew members aboard the ISS. Additionally, an absorbent bed designed to filter trace contaminants from cabin air and a separator pump from the waste and hygiene compartment are part of the returning cargo.<\/p>\n
The Dragon spacecraft arrived at the ISS on May 17, having launched two days prior on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The ISS has been continuously inhabited for over 25 years, serving as a platform for advancing scientific knowledge and conducting research not possible on Earth.
