Nara Organics has initiated a nationwide recall of its Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula following reports of three infants developing botulism after consuming the product. The affected infants, aged between 2 and 5 months, were located in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington. They consumed the formula between April and May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n
All three infants were hospitalized and received treatment with BabyBIG, an antitoxin used for infant botulism. The CDC has confirmed that no deaths have been reported in connection with these cases.<\/p>\n
The recall encompasses all Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula products distributed nationwide. This includes items sold at Target stores, on Target.com, and through Nara.com, with production dates ranging from July 2025 to June 2026.<\/p>\n
Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by the growth of Clostridium botulinum spores in a baby’s large intestine. These spores produce toxins that can attack the nervous system. Symptoms, which can take weeks to manifest, often begin with constipation. They may progress to difficulty with sucking and swallowing, a weak or altered cry, and poor head control. Other signs can include drooping eyelids, sluggish pupils, and facial weakness.<\/p>\n
The CDC warns that without prompt treatment, the illness can lead to progressive, flaccid paralysis, potentially causing breathing difficulties, respiratory failure, and requiring extended hospitalization.<\/p>\n
Parents and caregivers are urged to immediately discontinue the use of the recalled formula. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers to store any remaining product safely, away from other foods, and clearly label it as “Do Not Use.” State health officials may request samples for testing. If the infant is asymptomatic and officials do not require the product, it can be discarded or returned.<\/p>\n
Nara Organics, a manufacturer based in Europe, represents less than 1% of the infant formula market in the United States. The FDA stated that this recall is not anticipated to disrupt the national formula supply. This incident follows a previous outbreak of infant botulism linked to ByHeart formula, which led to numerous illnesses and a nationwide recall less than a year prior.
