The first medication designed to delay the onset of type 1 diabetes, known as Teplizumab, is now being made available on the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales. This immunotherapy treatment has the potential to provide individuals with approximately three additional years before they develop symptoms and require lifelong insulin therapy.<\/p>\n
The decision by the NHS medicines body has been described as “genuinely exciting,” with estimates suggesting that hundreds of children and young people could benefit annually. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, most commonly emerges in early adolescence but can occur at any age. Patient advocacy groups have hailed the drug’s availability as “momentous” after decades of effort to reach this point.<\/p>\n
Karen Addington, chief executive of the charity Breakthrough T1D, emphasized the significance of having a treatment that can offer more time free from the daily challenges of managing the condition. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is not typically linked to weight and requires constant monitoring of blood glucose levels and administration of insulin via injections or pumps.<\/p>\n
Teplizumab is administered as an infusion and is intended for use before symptoms of type 1 diabetes manifest. To qualify, individuals must undergo a blood test confirming that their immune system has already begun attacking the pancreas. The drug can be given to individuals aged eight and above.<\/p>\n
While the drug is now accessible, routine screening for the disease is not yet standard on the NHS in the UK, unlike in Italy, which has a national screening program. Individuals in the UK typically learn of their risk through blood tests for other medical reasons or due to family history, though most diagnosed cases lack a close family link, suggesting environmental factors may also contribute.<\/p>\n
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which recommended Teplizumab for use in England and Wales, estimates that around 1,100 adults and children may be eligible in the first year, with a projected 820 individuals receiving the treatment annually in the longer term. The published price for a course of Teplizumab is approximately \u00a3150,000, with a confidential discount negotiated with the manufacturer, Sanofi.<\/p>\n
Helen Knight, director of medicines evaluation at NICE, stated that this recommendation provides a treatment that can offer individuals diagnosed at an early stage “precious extra time before they need to manage the full demands of the condition.” Breakthrough T1D, which supported early research for the drug, noted that other type 1 diabetes immunotherapy treatments are under development, with the long-term hope of offering personalized combinations of therapies that could prevent dependence on insulin altogether.<\/p>\n
