NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has arrived at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida for its final pre-launch preparations and testing. The observatory, which is set to join other major space telescopes like Hubble and Webb, is scheduled to launch this summer aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.<\/p>\n
The telescope arrived at KSC on Sunday, June 21, after being transported from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. It traveled via NASA’s Pegasus barge from Baltimore to Florida’s Space Coast. Roman’s next stop is the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility (PHSF) at KSC, where recent upgrades have been completed to accommodate the spacecraft.<\/p>\n
Following its arrival, the telescope, housed in a specialized, environmentally-controlled container, was moved to the exterior of the PHSF. Teams began a decontamination and cleaning process on the container before it was opened on June 22 inside the PHSF airlock. The roughly 18,000-pound (8,200-kilogram) spacecraft was then unboxed and transported to a high bay clean room for prelaunch preparations.<\/p>\n
Inside the PHSF, engineers will conduct final checkouts of the spacecraft on a work platform referred to by NASA as “the Pantheon.” These tests will include the telescope’s six solar panels, insulation, and heat management components. Technicians will also load the Roman telescope with approximately 290 gallons (1,100 liters) of hypergolic hydrazine fuel. This fuel will power the satellite’s thrusters for its journey to its final orbit and for small positional adjustments over its expected operational lifespan of ten or more years.<\/p>\n
The Roman Space Telescope is destined for Sun-Earth Lagrange point two (L2), a stable gravitational point located about 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) beyond Earth, opposite the sun. Lagrange points are locations in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies, like the Earth and sun, are in balance, allowing a spacecraft to remain in position with minimal fuel expenditure.<\/p>\n
Once at L2, Roman’s mission is planned to last at least five years, with the potential for extension based on fuel availability and instrument performance. The telescope features a 7.9-foot-wide (2.4 meters) primary mirror and is equipped with a 300-megapixel camera and a coronagraph. Its primary scientific goals include investigating dark energy and the accelerating expansion of the universe by discovering billions of galaxies, hundreds of thousands of new exoplanets, hundreds of black holes, and collecting vast amounts of data for astronomers.<\/p>\n
