An interstellar comet, designated 3I\/ATLAS, which was first observed in July 2025, may be significantly older than our Solar System, potentially originating from a planetary system formed nearly 12 billion years ago. The precise age, origin, and trajectory of 3I\/ATLAS have been subjects of uncertainty since its discovery. Its unusual characteristics initially prompted speculation, including the idea that it might be an alien spacecraft. However, the SETI Institute recently announced that extensive radio scans found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology on the comet.<\/p>\n
A new analysis focused on isotopic measurements of elements found on 3I\/ATLAS’s surface. Observations conducted with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope indicated that the comet’s composition is unlike any known object within our Solar System. Researchers reported in the journal Nature that these isotopic measurements reveal an elemental makeup distinct from any Solar System body.<\/p>\n
By estimating the quantities of different forms of hydrogen and carbon, scientists aimed to understand the physical and chemical conditions of the comet’s formation environment and pinpoint its origin. The study found that 3I\/ATLAS possesses approximately 10 times the amount of deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen, compared to any other known comet.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the comet’s carbon isotope ratios were found to exceed typical values observed in the Solar System, as well as in nearby interstellar clouds and planet-forming disks. This suggests that 3I\/ATLAS likely formed in an extremely cold environment, estimated to be around minus 243 degrees Celsius (30 Kelvin).<\/p>\n
The researchers stated that such extreme isotopic signatures point to formation temperatures of about 30 Kelvin in a relatively metal-poor environment. Based on its carbon composition, the team estimated that the comet may have formed as long ago as 12 billion years, following a period of intense, early star formation in its host region.<\/p>\n
