The whereabouts of approximately 300 individuals who have tested positive for the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are currently unknown, Africa\u2019s top public health official announced. This situation is a significant concern amidst ongoing conflict and a humanitarian crisis that has displaced over a million people.<\/p>\n
Dr. Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), stated on Thursday that the lack of access to camps housing displaced populations hinders contact tracing and the overall response to the outbreak. “Where are these people?” Kaseya questioned, highlighting the challenges posed by the humanitarian situation.<\/p>\n
Projections from the World Health Organization’s Africa regional office, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, forecast approximately 8,210 cases and 1,420 deaths by mid-September. The modeling also indicated a 70% probability of the outbreak spreading to neighboring South Sudan in the coming weeks. To date, the DRC has recorded 1,118 confirmed cases and 291 deaths, with Uganda reporting 20 cases and two deaths.<\/p>\n
These figures indicate that 297 people who tested positive for Ebola are unaccounted for, according to an analysis of patient recovery, treatment, and death data. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus and is noted as the largest on record for five weeks after its declaration. At a comparable stage, the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak had 239 cases and 160 deaths.<\/p>\n
Kaseya noted that 30% of new cases are among known contacts of confirmed cases, pointing to significant community transmission. To bolster contact tracing, authorities plan to recruit 20,000 community health workers from local areas. Bed occupancy in Ebola treatment centers is at 95%, with health officials indicating that the peak of the outbreak has not yet been reached.<\/p>\n
The inability to access camps where displaced people are living poses a critical obstacle. “We cannot have a photo of what’s happening there. We cannot stop this outbreak, without resolving the humanitarian issue,” Kaseya stated. He also mentioned that the Ebola outbreak is occurring in areas with significant conflict, complicating efforts to reach affected populations.<\/p>\n
The Africa CDC and WHO had previously estimated that $518 million in health spending would be required to combat the outbreak. When humanitarian needs are factored in, the total cost rises to $1.4 billion. However, only about 13% of the $910 million pledged by international governments and organizations has been supplied so far.<\/p>\n
In an effort to combat the virus, the first trial of potential treatments for the Bundibugyo virus is scheduled to begin in the DRC next week.
