Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has voiced criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court and President Donald Trump following a recent ruling that favored Bayer AG in a significant Roundup lawsuit. Greene stated that the decision leaves cancer patients without adequate support.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision limited the scope of thousands of state-level lawsuits that alleged the herbicide Roundup, and its active ingredient glyphosate, could cause cancer. Bayer acquired Monsanto, the original developer of Roundup, in 2018 for $63 billion. The company has since been involved in over 100,000 lawsuits claiming that glyphosate is carcinogenic. In response to the growing litigation, Bayer has removed glyphosate from its consumer herbicide products.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court’s ruling overturned a $1.25 million award previously granted by a Missouri jury to John Durnell. Durnell had claimed that his non-Hodgkin lymphoma was caused by years of exposure to glyphosate. According to Reuters News, Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated in the ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has consistently concluded that glyphosate does not cause cancer and has not mandated that Bayer include a cancer warning on Roundup labels.<\/p>\n
Bayer, when asked for comment on Greene’s remarks, referred to a previous statement. The company indicated that the court’s decision supports the scientific consensus that glyphosate \u201cis not likely to be carcinogenic.\u201d Bayer also noted that regulatory bodies in Europe, Asia, and Latin America have reached similar conclusions after independent safety reviews. The company pointed out that much of the ongoing litigation has relied on a 2015 assessment from the International Agency for Research on Cancer.<\/p>\n
Greene’s criticism comes amid a broader political discussion surrounding glyphosate. In February, President Trump issued an executive order using the Defense Production Act to ensure domestic supplies of glyphosate-based herbicides and elemental phosphorus, designating them as critical for national security and agricultural production.
