The agency is launching a novel mission, dubbed Swift Boost, on June 30 to push the observatory into a higher orbit, potentially extending its scientific life by several years.

A Unique Orbital Sentinel

Launched in 2004 for a planned two-year mission, the Swift Observatory has spent over two decades serving as a critical instrument for detecting and studying gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). These are extremely powerful, short-lived explosions in space. NASA states that Swift’s unique capability to rapidly pivot across the night sky to observe these transient events makes it invaluable, a feat not matched by other observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope or the James Webb Space Telescope, which require significantly longer to target new celestial phenomena.

The observatory, renamed the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in 2018, has been instrumental in astronomical discoveries. Its observations helped confirm that the universe’s heaviest elements, including gold and platinum, were forged by GRBs. In 2022, Swift detected a GRB so bright it was nicknamed the “BOAT” (Brightest of All Time).

Higher-than-expected atmospheric drag, exacerbated by solar storms, is causing Swift to descend from its 375-mile (600 km) orbit. Without intervention, the observatory is predicted to fall below 186 miles (300 km) by October, leading to its fiery re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere by year’s end.

Katalyst Space’s Rescue Attempt

The Swift Boost mission is being executed by Katalyst Space, an Arizona-based company selected by NASA just nine months ago. The mission will utilize Katalyst’s Link spacecraft, described as being about the size of a refrigerator, equipped with ion engines, robotic arms, and thrusters. The spacecraft will launch on the last Pegasus XL rocket, carried by the last L-1011 Stargazer carrier plane, from the Reagan Missile Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll.

The development timeline for the Link spacecraft and its rendezvous mission to an observatory not designed for servicing has been described as unprecedented. Kieran Wilson, Link’s principal investigator at Katalyst, noted the mission’s urgency has driven the rapid development. NASA’s Swift Principal Investigator, Brad Cenko, acknowledged the inherent risks and the sleepless nights involved but expressed confidence in the team.

Following its launch, Link will spend several weeks conducting in-orbit tests before attempting to rendezvous with Swift. If successful, its robotic arms will grapple the observatory, and it will spend up to three months gradually raising Swift’s orbit. This process aims to secure at least five to ten more years of scientific operations.

NASA officials emphasized that this rescue is an exception, not a precedent for all deorbiting spacecraft, as maintaining a space ecosystem that includes deorbiting objects is also important. However, Swift’s unique astronomical capabilities justified the investment.

If the mission fails, Swift will deorbit naturally as it is already programmed to do. The Swift science team has already placed the observatory in a low-power mode to conserve energy and slow its descent, demonstrating their acceptance of the potential outcome while highlighting the significant potential benefit of a successful rescue.

NASA is investing $30 million in a novel rescue mission to extend the life of the nearly 22-year-old Swift Observatory, an instrument crucial for detecting gamma-ray bursts.

[3
2182,2373,132,1741,2180

NASA to Fund $30 Million Mission to Rescue Aging Swift Telescope - News Raise

<meta name="description" content="NASA's Swift Observatory, vital for gamma-ray burst detection, faces deorbit due to atmospheric drag.
