U.S. automakers are experiencing a split in second-quarter sales results, with companies featuring hybrid vehicles largely outperforming those without, influenced by elevated gas prices and a slowdown in demand for all-electric vehicles.<\/p>\n
Toyota Motor, a global leader in hybrid technology, reported a 1.1% increase in its second-quarter sales, largely propelled by a nearly 20% rise in electrified vehicle sales. Hyundai Motor saw a 4% increase in the quarter, with a significant 67% surge in hybrid sales during the first half of the year. Honda Motor noted that record electrified sales contributed to an 8.4% jump in overall second-quarter sales, while Kia reported approximately 3% growth overall and a 152% increase in hybrid sales for the quarter.<\/p>\n
“Hybrids are definitely our growth engine right now,” said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai and Genesis North America. “Hybrids are really, really taking off right now as consumers, I think, are prioritizing fuel efficiency and lower operating costs due to high gas prices.” Gas prices have risen more than 20% compared to the same period last year, according to AAA.<\/p>\n
Other automakers also reported positive results. Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, saw a 5.9% increase, and Nissan Motor reported a 9.6% rise. Both companies have limited electrified offerings but are implementing sales-focused turnaround strategies.<\/p>\n
In contrast, General Motors, which has a broad EV lineup but only one hybrid model, reported a 4.2% decline in second-quarter sales. The company’s EV sales were down 33% compared to the previous year, with significant declines across its brands, including Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC. Despite these drops, GM executives stated the company’s business is performing well, with resilient customer demand, particularly for trucks and SUVs, and maintained discipline on incentives.<\/p>\n
Cox Automotive and J.D. Power anticipate that overall industry sales for the second quarter will be relatively flat compared to the previous year. Cox Automotive forecasted a 0.5% decrease, while J.D. Power expected a 0.7% increase in vehicles sold. Motor Intelligence estimated June U.S. industry sales rose 7.5% year-over-year, with a selling pace of 16.67 million units.<\/p>\n
Cox Automotive expects Tesla to see a decline of more than 20% in the second quarter, a trend attributed partly to the expiration of federal incentives for electric vehicles. Ford Motor, which is expected to report its results soon, is also anticipated to be an outlier, with Cox Automotive projecting an 11.5% decrease due to production issues, particularly with pickup trucks.<\/p>\n
