The Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) confirmed the virus was identified in a mosquito pool collected in North Nashville, marking the earliest positive mosquito sample for the season.<\/p>\n
This detection follows elevated West Nile virus activity observed in mosquito populations during the previous year, which saw one confirmed human case. Dr. Sanmi Areola, director of health at MPHD, emphasized the community’s role in mitigating mosquito presence and preventing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus. Health officials routinely trap and test mosquitoes throughout the summer to monitor for the virus.
