New York City health officials are investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, which has now been linked to 36 confirmed cases. Of these, 22 individuals have been hospitalized.<\/p>\n
The cases have been identified across three ZIP codes on the Upper East Side, encompassing the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, and Lenox Hill. Health officials believe the disease is being spread through airborne droplets containing legionella bacteria, likely originating from contaminated cooling towers.<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the city intends to release the specific addresses of buildings where legionella bacteria has been found in cooling towers. “It’s important to understand the risk here isn’t coming from inside the building, it is coming from outside the building in these ZIP codes,” commented Dr. Darien Sutton, an ABC News correspondent.<\/p>\n
Testing of cooling towers in the affected areas was expected to be completed by the end of Wednesday. The health department planned to issue a list of cooling towers of interest by the end of the week. “We’re going to be taking the step of releasing the addresses of wherever has been impacted, because we know that transparency is also a critical part of how New Yorkers can continue to go about their day,” Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia contracted by inhaling contaminated mist. It is not spread from person to person. While most healthy individuals do not become ill, the disease carries a significant risk of mortality, with approximately one in 10 contracting it facing a fatal outcome, particularly among the elderly, smokers, and those with pre-existing health conditions.<\/p>\n
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease can resemble typical pneumonia, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath, and may also involve gastrointestinal issues. Health officials are urging anyone experiencing flu-like or pneumonia-like symptoms to seek medical attention.
