Fidji Simo, who was leading OpenAI’s work on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is stepping down from her full-time role. She will transition to a part-time advisory position with the company, according to an announcement she made on the social media platform X.<\/p>\n
Simo had previously taken a medical leave a few months prior to this announcement. In April, she had disclosed that she would be taking several weeks of medical leave due to a neuroimmune condition. At that time, she had recently assumed the title of AGI chief, having previously served as the company\u2019s CEO of applications.<\/p>\n
Simo’s departure from her full-time AGI leadership role follows a period of significant C-suite changes at OpenAI. Around the same time Simo initially announced her medical leave, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap also stepped down from his role to concentrate on “special projects.” Additionally, OpenAI’s Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch stepped down to focus on her health, with plans to return to a “more narrowly scoped role” when her health permitted.<\/p>\n
During Simo’s medical leave, OpenAI President Greg Brockman had been overseeing product responsibilities, including the company’s super app initiatives. The business operations were managed by Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, and Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser.<\/p>\n
In mid-May, OpenAI underwent a company reorganization. Brockman officially assumed responsibility for OpenAI’s product strategy and “scaling.” This included leading four key areas: core product and platform; critical enterprise industries; consumer-focused areas such as health, commerce, and personal finance; and core infrastructure, ads, data science, and growth. A memo indicated this reorganization was intended to help the company prioritize its AI agent goals by consolidating products into a unified agentic platform, merging ChatGPT and Codex into a single agentic experience.<\/p>\n
In her statement on X, Simo shared details about her health challenges. “Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I\u2019ve lived with for seven years,” she wrote. “During that time, it became clear that the road to recovery would be much longer and more complex than I had anticipated\u2014and that I needed to focus on it fully.” She described the experience as jarring, balancing efforts to build the future with navigating a disabling disease that currently has no cure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
