The device, inspired by the diving abilities of seabirds like the Atlantic puffin, marks a significant advancement in bio-inspired robotics.

Designing an Aerial-Aquatic Machine

The robot, weighing approximately half a pound with a wingspan of nearly three feet, was developed over two years by a team led by mechanical engineer Raphael Zufferey. The challenge lay in creating wings that could operate efficiently in both air and water, mediums with vastly different densities. Zufferey explained that the design departed from typical diving bird mechanics by omitting legs, which are complex to implement in robots. Instead, the robot relies on its wings to transition directly from water to air.

To simplify the design and reduce weight for flight, the wings are not foldable, a common feature in diving birds. The robot’s central body, which houses the motor and battery, is intentionally left open, allowing water to flood the system. This design choice requires individual waterproofing of all electronic components but ensures the robot is light enough for flight and neutrally buoyant in water, preventing it from sinking or floating to the surface.

The wings are constructed from a translucent nylon fabric supported by carbon fiber struts. For sustained flight, the robot flaps its wings five to six times per second. To take off from water, however, it must increase its flapping rate to ten times per second to generate the necessary speed and thrust. This is a power output that most diving birds achieve by running on the water’s surface with their legs, with only exceptionally light birds like the kingfisher being an exception.

Potential Applications and Future Development

Glenna Clifton, an animal movement biologist at the University of Portland not involved in the research, commented that the robot offers valuable insights into the unique flight biology of diving birds. She noted that bio-inspired robots serve a dual purpose: biology inspires robotics, and robotics, in turn, can be used to understand biology more deeply.

The research team demonstrated the robot’s capabilities in a video filmed at Lake Geneva, Switzerland, showing it bursting from the water into the air in under a second, with a sound akin to a bird taking flight. Calculations by the researchers suggest the robot could fly for nearly four miles or swim for just over a mile on a single charge, a range comparable to the swimming and running portions of a sprint triathlon.

Clifton described the development as a “monumental step” in the performance of swimming, flying, and transitioning between the two mediums. Zufferey anticipates numerous applications for this type of robot, including monitoring coastal environments, tracking fish stocks, observing harmful algal blooms, and studying coastal erosion. The team plans to equip the robot with sensors for data collection and continues to refine its design, drawing ongoing inspiration from the natural world.

Researchers have developed a novel aerial-aquatic robot, inspired by diving seabirds, capable of transitioning between flight and swimming.
