A new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), published in the journal Circulation, revises that view. The guidance concludes that for most healthy adults, consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day – roughly five eight‑ounce cups of regular brewed coffee – is generally safe and may be linked to cardiovascular benefits.

Key findings of the AHA statement

The AHA defines the typical upper limit for caffeine intake at 400 mg per day. A standard brewed coffee contains between 9.4 and 20.6 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, so the caffeine content can vary widely based on brew method and serving size. The statement emphasizes that plain coffee, without added sugars or flavored syrups, shows the strongest evidence of benefit; extra sweeteners can diminish any potential advantage.

Researchers highlighted several specific health outcomes. For people with optimal blood pressure, drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily was associated with a modestly higher risk of developing hypertension, whereas consuming more than three cups appeared linked to a lower risk. In the realm of type‑2 diabetes, evidence points to black caffeinated coffee – consumed without cream, sweeteners, or flavorings – being associated with a reduced risk of developing the disease. The authors note that caffeine may temporarily reduce insulin sensitivity, suggesting that other coffee compounds likely drive the protective effect.

Regarding cholesterol, the type of brew matters. Randomized trials indicate that cafestol, a compound present in unfiltered coffee such as espresso, French press, Turkish and boiled coffee, can raise low‑density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Paper‑filtered coffee removes most cafestol, and instant coffee contains little of it, making filtered coffee a preferable option for cholesterol management.

Heart rhythm and other cautions

The AHA statement reports that drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day was not linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) or other major arrhythmias. However, randomized trials found a higher incidence of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) – extra heartbeats that are usually harmless but can be uncomfortable – in people who consumed caffeine in coffee.

Energy drinks and shots were singled out for separate caution. Because they can contain substantially more caffeine per ounce than coffee, they have been associated with higher risks of hypertension and irregular heart rhythms. The AHA notes that recommendations for coffee do not automatically apply to these other caffeine sources.

Clinical perspective

Interventional cardiologist Dr. Kelley Chen of Henry Ford Health Genesys Heart Center, who reviewed the new guidance, said, “Caffeine has always gotten a bad rap when it comes to cardiovascular health… Up to four or five drinks of coffee a day was OK — and, in some cases, beneficial.” He added that coffee’s complex blend of antioxidants and other compounds likely contributes to its potential health benefits, making it difficult to isolate the effects of caffeine alone.

The AHA’s bottom line advises that most adults can safely consume up to 400 mg of caffeine daily from coffee, and that such intake may be linked to lower risk of heart disease, stroke and heart failure, especially when coffee is consumed plain. Individuals who experience palpitations, have sleep disturbances, are pregnant, or have uncontrolled high blood pressure should discuss appropriate caffeine limits with a clinician.

The American Heart Association’s new statement finds up to 400 mg of caffeine a day – roughly five cups of coffee – is safe for most adults and may offer heart benefits.

[4
2625,2626,2624,1859,2623
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v15.8 -
