The RTGs lose roughly four watts of power each year, gradually shrinking the energy budget available to the spacecraft. To cope with this decline, engineers have turned off several non\u2011science systems and substituted lower\u2011power alternatives that still maintain the necessary thermal environment for the probe, which is now far beyond the reach of sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>NASA officials described the spacecraft\u2019s power margins as \u201crazor thin,\u201d necessitating careful energy conservation. Voyager\u202f1, now the most distant human\u2011made object, is roughly 171 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, about 15.9\u202fbillion miles (25.5\u202fbillion kilometres) away. Voyager\u202f2 trails at approximately 142\u202fAU.<\/p>\n<h2>Future Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Communicating with the Voyagers remains a slow process; a signal takes nearly 24\u202fhours to travel one way between Earth and each spacecraft. The power\u2011saving measures are intended to buy additional time before the remaining instruments are forced offline due to insufficient electricity.<\/p>\n<p>While the \u201cBig Bang\u201d maneuver does not add new power, it reallocates existing energy more efficiently, ensuring that the scientific payloads continue to collect data on the interstellar environment. The continued operation of Voyager\u202f2 will provide valuable comparative measurements alongside Voyager\u202f1, deepening our understanding of the space beyond the Sun\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the Voyager program, emphasizes that the longevity of the missions depends on careful power budgeting and the willingness to retire non\u2011essential systems.
