{"id":643,"date":"2020-06-04T11:51:05","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T11:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/?p=643"},"modified":"2020-06-04T11:51:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T11:51:20","slug":"the-new-york-times-jeopardise-black-staff-lives-in-publishing-tom-cotton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/04\/the-new-york-times-jeopardise-black-staff-lives-in-publishing-tom-cotton\/","title":{"rendered":"The New York Times Jeopardise Black Staff Lives in Publishing Tom Cotton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>New York<\/u>: A newspaper with such authority chooses to publish a party-political essay to further inflame the violence wrecking cities across America, the act is questionable.<\/p>\n<p>On June 3, The New York Time published a section of an essay by a Republican senator from Arkansas, Tom Cotton, headlined \u201csend in the troops.\u201d It is likely said that handful of them are in support of President Donald Trump\u2019s threat to mobilize US military on the streets to contain the protest if need be; the protest triggered by the police manhandling George Floyd, which eventually led to his death.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper\u2019s decision on publishing that essay had provoked the Netizens, including several journalists. Some simply stated that they disagree with Cotton, but others objections ran far deeper due to political pressure. They also expressed concern over endangering your own staff\u2019s lives, especially who are black. In a situation where the police are already turning to violence to shut down journalists covering the protests, this a well-rooted objection.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I want to explain why we published the piece today by Senator Tom Cotton. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GvWwf7i0Wu\">https:\/\/t.co\/GvWwf7i0Wu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; James Bennet (@JBennet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JBennet\/status\/1268328278730866689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Tom Cotton targeted rioters and \u201cnihilist criminals\u201d out for the thrill of the loot and destruction, adding they had nothing to do with Floyd\u2019s death, or a majority who seek to protest peacefully.<\/p>\n<p>Nikole Hannah-Jones, a correspondent for The New York Times Magazine, who won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary last month, tweeted \u201cI\u2019ll probably get in trouble for this, but to not say something would be immoral. As a black woman, as a journalist, as an American, I am deeply ashamed that we ran this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the three and a half tumultuous years of the Trump presidency, America\u2019s serious national newspapers the Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times have been a remarkable barricade in defense of American democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The NewsGuild of New York, the union that represents many Times journalists, said in a statement, \u201cThis is a particularly vulnerable moment in American history. Cotton\u2019s Op-Ed pours gasoline on the fire.
