{"id":686,"date":"2020-06-09T11:14:40","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T11:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/?p=686"},"modified":"2020-06-09T11:23:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-09T11:23:38","slug":"spread-of-coronavirus-by-people-with-no-symptoms-is-rare-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsraise.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/09\/spread-of-coronavirus-by-people-with-no-symptoms-is-rare-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Spread of Coronavirus by \u2018People with No Symptoms\u2019 is Rare: WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spread of COVID-19 by people who don\u2019t show symptoms appears to be rare, says Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical lead for coronavirus response and head of the emerging diseases and zoonoses unit at World Health Organisation, during a media briefing in Geneva on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van Kerkhove said on Monday, \u201dFrom the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual. We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing. They&#8217;re following asymptomatic cases, they&#8217;re following contacts and they&#8217;re not finding secondary transmission onward. It is very rare\u00a0 and much of that is not published in the literature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van Kerkhove went on to describe how the novel coronavirus is a respiratory pathogen that spreads through droplets and which can be released when someone coughs or sneezes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt passes from an individual through infectious droplets. If we actually followed all of the symptomatic cases, isolated those cases, followed the contacts and quarantined those cases, we would drastically reduce, I would love to be able to give a proportion of how much transmission we would actually stop, but it would be a drastic reduction in transmission,\u201d says Van.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/multimedia\/api\/embed\/iframe?id=c7075558-49b1-4f0a-8362-7ef9b7770c35\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also added by saying, \u201cWe are constantly looking at this data and we&#8217;re trying to get more information from countries to truly answer this question. It still appears to be rare that an asymptomatic individual actually transmits onward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, a study was found that viral shedding is when people may be able to infect others which could begin as early in two to three days before symptoms appeared. In addition, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimates in planning scenarios that 40% of coronavirus transmission is occurring before people feel
