A new report made by a group of researchers shows how the fossil fuel industry has misled the public about the threat their products pose to the climate. The new report sheds light on how the major corporations have been actively misguiding the public by undermining the threat of climate change through advertisements and funding.<\/p>\n
The new report titled “America misled: how the fossil fuel industry deliberately misled Americans about climate change,” was published on Monday. The report shall help in counterbalancing the damage done by oil companies by providing accurate information collected by the research team over a period of more than ten years. The work is a collaboration of academicians from Bristol University in the UK and George Mason and Harvard University in the US.<\/p>\n
The researchers pointed at the marked similarity between the tactics used by the fossil fuel industry with that of the tobacco companies which mislead the public about the threats of smoking. The researchers wrote in the report that \u00a0“Climate deniers reject climate science because they are averse to proposed or perceived solutions to climate change.”<\/p>\n
While speaking to the Los Angeles Times, co-author of the report, Geoffrey Supan said that “For 60 years, the fossil fuel industry has known about the potential global warming dangers of their products. But instead of warning the public or doing something about it, they turned around and orchestrated a massive campaign of denial and delay designed to protect profits. The evidence is incontrovertible: Exxon misled the public.”<\/p>\n
The company is supposed to be present for trial in state Supreme Court in Manhattan as a result of New York\u2019s lawsuit against Exxon. The lawsuit says that the company allegedly misguided its investors causing them to overestimate its stock.
