The Super Bee name has returned to the Dodge Charger, this time with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Sixpack inline-six engine, producing 600 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque. This makes it the most powerful gasoline-fueled Charger Sixpack announced so far, with the ability to reach 60 mph in the mid-three-second range.
History of the Super Bee
The Super Bee badge first appeared on the Dodge Coronet in 1968 and has since been featured on various Dodge performance models, including the 2023 Last Call edition. The latest version may be the most controversial yet, as it abandons the traditional V8 formula associated with the name.
Dodge has made significant changes to the engine, including larger 56-mm Garrett turbochargers running at over 30 psi of boost, revised intake hardware, additional cooling, and unique engine calibration. The result is an increase of 50 horsepower over the standard high-output Charger Sixpack.
Performance and Features
The Super Bee features an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, with the ability to run from zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds. The car also features Torque Reserve, allowing the powertrain to build boost before launching, and strengthened driveline hardware to cope with repeated hard starts.
In addition to its straight-line performance, the Super Bee has been designed to handle corners, with a revised front fascia to improve airflow and generate more aerodynamic load at high speed. The suspension features dual-valve adaptive dampers, stiffer springs, revised bushings, and a stronger rear anti-roll bar.
The car also features massive 16-inch Brembo rotors with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, as well as a dedicated rear-wheel-drive mode, allowing the driver to disconnect the front axle and send the full output rearward. This mode joins Track, Drag, and Race Prep settings, as well as Line Lock and Launch Control.
Design and Visuals
The Super Bee features loud graphics, redesigned turbo-inspired bee logos, gloss-black exterior details, and Hyper Lime brake calipers. The car will be offered in several color options, including Sucker Punch, a bright yellow-green shade paired with black graphics, and Diamond Black, a more subdued alternative.
Inside, the Super Bee features cloth performance seats with Citrus Peel inserts, embroidered bee logos, and contrasting Sour Lemon stitching. The car also features larger paddle shifters and a dedicated rear-drive button, adding to the sense of occasion from behind the wheel.
Pricing and production numbers for the Super Bee Launch Edition have not been announced, but Dodge has confirmed that it will be a limited-production model. The bigger debate will likely revolve around the absence of a V8, with traditionalists potentially feeling that a turbocharged straight-six Super Bee may not be authentic.
