Scientists Warn Bright Mirror Satellites Could Damage Eyes and Night Sky

Last month the Federal Communications Commission gave the green light to an experimental satellite built by venture Reflect Orbital. The spacecraft, dubbed Eärendil‑1, is designed to reflect sunlight onto the Earth’s surface at night, offering illumination for solar farms after dark and for emergency situations. While the proposal is presented as a technological boon, a coalition of astronomers, health specialists and environmental groups warns that the bright mirror could pose serious risks to human vision and to the night‑time environment.

Health and safety concerns

Professional and amateur astronomers alike have expressed alarm at the potential for eye injury. The Verge reported that even looking through a 12‑inch telescope—a common instrument among hobbyists—could cause permanent damage when aimed at the reflected beam. Royal Astronomical Society deputy executive director Robert Massey described the FCC’s approval as “extraordinary” given the health hazard. He noted that similar research on a Russian prototype called Znamya, published in 2000 by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, indicated that exposure could be comparable to staring directly at the Sun during a total eclipse.

Critics of the FCC decision highlighted that the agency received nearly 2,000 public comments opposing the project, many of which focused on the eye‑damage risk. Nonetheless, regulators deemed the concern “small” relative to the perceived benefits of allowing American companies to test innovative space technology.

Impact on astronomy and ecosystems

The mirror’s brightness could also interfere with deep‑space observations. Astronomers warned that they would receive no advance notice of the satellite’s position in the night sky, increasing the chance of accidental exposure. In a statement quoted by The Guardian, presidents of several international chronobiology associations warned that deploying the satellite at scale would “significantly alter the natural night‑time light environment at a planetary scale,” potentially disrupting sleep patterns in humans and migratory species.

The Air Line Pilots Association added its own safety concerns, suggesting that the reflected light could affect aviation operations. Reflect Orbital spokesperson Christopher Buscombe told The Verge that the company is in active dialogue with “scientists, astronomers, environmental researchers and other stakeholders” and that the demonstration satellite will incorporate built‑in safeguards. He said the company intends to limit reflected light to “levels humans and animals already tolerate,” though experts cautioned that atmospheric scattering, cloud cover and other variables make precise control difficult.

Broader context of satellite proliferation

The controversy surrounding Eärendil‑1 reflects a wider debate about the rapid growth of low‑Earth‑orbit spacecraft. Over the past decade, the number of satellites in low Earth orbit has surged, and many newer platforms operate at lower altitudes that make them appear brighter from the ground. Massey warned that deploying “more than one million exceptionally bright satellites would utterly destroy” the starry sky, a heritage valued by humanity.

Reflect Orbital’s proposal, while innovative, raises questions about balancing technological advancement with preservation of human health, scientific observation and ecological stability. The FCC’s decision, the volume of public opposition, and the array of expert warnings suggest that the conversation about bright mirror satellites is far from settled.
