Ice‑Age Toolmaking in China 146,000 Years Ago Linked to Homo juluensis

Excavations at the Lingjing site in northern China have produced stone tools that date to roughly 146,000 years ago, a full 20,000 years earlier than earlier estimates. The artifacts are associated with Homo juluensis, an extinct hominin that lived in East Asia during the Middle Pleistocene. The new chronology, reported in the Journal of Human Evolution, places the toolmakers amid some of the most severe glacial conditions of the last ice age, challenging the view that advanced lithic technology in the region lagged behind contemporaneous developments in Africa and Europe.

Advanced Lithic Techniques

The Lingjing assemblage includes disc‑shaped stone cores that, despite their simple appearance, reveal a sophisticated manufacturing process. Some cores are evenly flaked on both sides, while others display an asymmetrical design with one side serving as a striking platform and the opposite side prepared for controlled flake removal. Researchers say the makers demonstrated a clear understanding of stone as a three‑dimensional material, anticipating fracture patterns by carefully positioning strikes during knapping.

“This was not casual flake production, but a technology that required planning, precision, and a deep understanding of stone properties and fracture mechanics,” said lead author Yuchao Zhao, assistant curator of East Asian archaeology at Chicago’s Field Museum. Zhao added that such skill suggests the ancient artisans possessed cognitive abilities comparable to those seen in Middle Paleolithic technologies linked to Neanderthals in Europe and early Homo sapiens in Africa.

Revised Chronology

The earlier date stems from uranium‑thorium analysis of tiny calcite crystals preserved within an animal rib bone found at the site. The crystals contain trace uranium that decays into thorium over time; measuring the ratio of the two elements provided a natural clock that extended Lingjing’s age from the previously accepted 126,000 years to about 146,000 years.

“Even though these tools are just a little bit older than we’d previously thought, the entire story is changed,” Zhao remarked, emphasizing how the new timeline reshapes interpretations of ice‑age technology in ancient China.

Implications for Human Evolution

The findings underscore environmental hardship as a possible driver of innovation. According to Zhao, “Hard times can force us to adapt,” and the demanding glacial climate may have pushed Homo juluensis to experiment with novel survival strategies, resulting in the observed technological complexity.

Homo juluensis is currently a candidate designation for a range of archaic human types, including the enigmatic Denisovans. By linking these advanced tools to that hominin, the research adds nuance to discussions of how diverse human groups across Eurasia developed similar cognitive and technological capacities despite geographic separation.

Overall, the Lingjing discoveries suggest that East Asian populations during the Middle Pleistocene were capable of sophisticated stone‑crafting behavior, expanding the known geographic scope of early complex technology and offering a richer narrative of human adaptation and intelligence in the face of severe climate change.
