China’s Chang’e‑7 lunar probe, designed to hunt for water ice at the Moon’s south pole, will not launch during the 2024 window as previously planned, the China Manned Space Engineering Office announced via state media.
Delay reasons and new timeline
The launch had been set for Sunday evening or early Monday morning Beijing time from the Hainan launch complex in southern China. No specific replacement date was given, but officials indicated the spacecraft will be prepared for a later window, likely next year.
State media reported that the probe “does not meet launch conditions” and that the decision followed a “principle of prudence, reliability and absolute mission success.” According to Wiphu Rujopakarn, executive director of Thailand’s National Astronomical Research Institute, the chief factor appears to be weather, specifically stronger-than‑expected high‑altitude winds over the launch area. He added that while other technical issues cannot be ruled out, they would be unlikely to cause a delay of this magnitude without the narrow launch window.
Rujopakarn, who receives updates as part of a seven‑nation partnership that supplied scientific instruments for the mission, said the launch may be shifted to one of two opportunities in the spring or mid‑summer of the following year. The postponement underscores the technically demanding and “unprecedented” nature of the operation, which requires the spacecraft to enter a precise orbit before descending to a carefully chosen landing site on the rim of a south‑pole crater.
Mission objectives and technical challenges
No spacecraft has ever attempted a soft landing on the rim of a lunar south‑pole crater, making the maneuver extremely difficult. Chang’e‑7 will carry a robotic hopper that can detach from the lander, hop across crater terrain and drill for ice deposits.
The United States is pursuing similar goals. While orbital sensors have identified possible ice deposits, no American mission has yet drilled on the surface. In 2025, Texas‑based Intuitive Machines sent a drill to the south pole, but the lander slipped on the treacherous terrain and failed to meet its objectives.
Broader context of the lunar water race
Other U.S. ventures are slated for the same region. Pittsburgh’s Astrobotic Technologies hopes to launch its Griffin lander as early as late 2026, and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin plans up to two robotic landers next year, one potentially carrying NASA’s VIPER rover designed to prospect for water ice.
Scientists stress that the presence of usable quantities of water ice remains uncertain. James Head, a professor emeritus at Brown University who worked on the Apollo program, said Chang’e‑7 could provide “important progress” in determining whether lunar ice is abundant enough for extraction. Lunar geologist Yuqi Qian of the University of Hong Kong noted that China’s program is shifting from pure exploration toward resource utilization, reflecting a broader move toward sustainable lunar activity.
Water ice is viewed as a critical asset for future lunar bases because it can be converted into breathable air, drinking water, or rocket propellant. The delay of Chang’e‑7 temporarily eases competitive pressure on the United States, but the overall race to establish a foothold at the Moon’s south pole is expected to intensify as both nations prepare multiple missions over the next few years.
