Microsoft releases Windows 11 preview that restores right‑click menu control

Microsoft has begun distributing a preview update for Windows 11 that tackles a long‑standing complaint from power users about the operating system’s context menu. The update, identified as KB5127936, is a cumulative package for Windows 11 versions 26H2 and 25H2. It will be rolled out gradually before moving to a standard deployment for all Windows 11 devices once it reaches general availability.

Customizable right‑click menu

The centerpiece of the preview is a “customize menu” button that gives users direct control over the commands that appear when they right‑click. Previously, Microsoft had reorganized the context menu, placing familiar commands behind a row of icons and moving others into a “Show more options” submenu. This shift disrupted muscle memory built over years of using Windows.

With the new feature, users can toggle built‑in commands such as “Send To” or “Create Shortcut” on or off, rearrange the order of items on the main menu, and decide which third‑party extensions appear in the main menu or submenus. The change is intended to let long‑time users restore the layout they prefer without needing custom scripts or third‑party utilities.

Cloud Rebuild recovery option

Alongside the menu overhaul, the preview introduces a recovery tool called Cloud Rebuild. This option allows Windows 11 to be reinstalled directly from the cloud, even when the existing installation fails to boot. Cloud Rebuild pulls the required Windows 11 image and system drivers from Windows Update, eliminating the need for a custom recovery image or external installation media.

Microsoft classifies Cloud Rebuild as a recovery option, but it functions more like a fresh installation: existing applications and personal files are not retained. Users concerned about data security can wipe drives before invoking the feature, ensuring a clean slate. A full list of improvements, including changes to Xbox mode and other settings, is available in Microsoft’s official release announcement.

Financial backdrop

The timing of the update coincides with Microsoft’s latest quarterly financial report, which indicated a continued decline in revenue from selling Windows licenses for new PCs. While the company has not linked the preview to the revenue trend, the rollout underscores an effort to address user experience issues that could influence future adoption of the operating system.

Overall, the KB5127936 preview aims to restore familiarity for power users through menu customization and to simplify system recovery with Cloud Rebuild, offering a more flexible Windows 11 experience as the platform faces a challenging market environment.
