Google Photos Introduces AI Video Remix Tool

Google Photos is introducing a new artificial intelligence-powered feature called “Video Remix” that allows users to edit and transform video clips quickly. The tool, announced by Google on Wednesday, is powered by Gemini Omni, Google’s recently released model designed to generate content from various inputs.

This addition represents Google’s ongoing effort to integrate generative AI capabilities into its consumer applications. By embedding video editing functions directly into Google Photos, the company aims to simplify the editing process for users, enabling them to enhance videos with minimal effort and without needing specialized software. This move also serves to encourage users to remain within Google’s digital ecosystem.

AI-Powered Editing Capabilities

The Video Remix feature can be found within the “Create” tab in Google Photos. It offers a range of editing options, including the ability to apply cinematic relighting to improve the appearance of dark clips, replace existing backgrounds with new ones, and add artistic filters such as watercolor, raw sketchbook, and oil painting effects to videos.

For instance, users can modify a video to simulate being filmed in a greenhouse, adjust lighting to mimic a morning glow, or apply a watercolor aesthetic to the entire clip. Google stated in a blog post that the aim is to make video creation accessible, allowing users to “transform ordinary videos into share-worthy moments in just a few taps” without requiring professional editing skills.

Rollout and Related Features

Video Remix is beginning its rollout on Wednesday for eligible Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in select regions including the U.S., Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, and Turkey.

This new feature follows a series of AI-driven enhancements to Google Photos. Recently, the app introduced touch-up tools for subtle edits like blemish removal, skin texture refinement, and teeth whitening. Google also announced an AI feature that converts photos of clothing into a digital closet, enabling users to generate new outfit ideas and virtually try them on.
