Rs 1.15 lakh crore transferred to 10.75 crore farmers under PM-Kisan

The government said on Wednesday that it has directly transferred more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore to the bank accounts of more than 10.75 crore farmers under the PM-Kisan scheme.

Addressing a function on the occasion of the second anniversary of PM-Kisan, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that Tomar has been asked by the government to ensure that all eligible farmers get the benefit of this flagship program. Tomar said that so far 10.75 crore farmers have benefited from this scheme and the Center has disbursed more than Rs 1.15 lakh crore directly to farmers’ bank accounts.

Under this scheme, farmers are provided cash of Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh on February 24, 2019. Modi separately tweeted that his government has initiated a historic increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for crops and is doing everything possible to double the income of farmers. He also said that in the last seven years, his government has taken several steps to bring changes in the agriculture sector.

He said that there are many farmers who are complaining that they are not getting PM-farmer benefits. Stating that there should be adequate provision in the budget for the PM-Kisan scheme, Tomar emphasized on ensuring effective implementation of the program. He said, “All eligible beneficiaries should get the benefit of this scheme and no one should be exempted.” He said that the number of people who have been left out is not very large.

Tomar said that the initial target was to bring 14.5 crore farmers under the ambit of the scheme and efforts are on to add more beneficiaries. Asked about West Bengal still not participating in the program, Tomar said that the funds will be provided by the Center after the state government shares the list of beneficiaries.

The minister outlined other initiatives taken by the government in the last six and a half years, including the creation of PM-Kisan, an agro-infrastructure fund of Rs 1 lakh crore and 10,000 FPOs (farmer producing organizations). Tomar said that the agricultural sector has performed exceptionally well during the Covid-19 pandemic. The minister regretted that despite being such an important area, farming has not been profitable.
