ICC World Test Championship Final 2025: Action Begins from June 11

Get ready to witness the finals of World Test Championship 2025, set to be played between defending champions Australia, as they go against the formidable South Africa on 11th June at the Lords’ stadium.

Test cricket, the most authentic and purest format of the game, has been often described as the ultimate test of kill, patience, and character. Played over five days, it challenges a cricketer’s endurance like no other format, offering an in-depth and nuanced narrative that unfolds session by session. While the T20 matches may deliver instant entertainment, Test cricket remains the most revered expression of the sport’s traditions and complexities.  To preserve and elevate the prestige of this classic format, the International Cricket Council (ICC), which is the apex body for cricket, introduced the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2019. Designed to add some substance and a competitive structure to all the bilateral test series, the WTC aims to crown the world’s best Test team through a league-based tournament culminating into a grand finale.

This two-term old format structure has brought renewed relevance and global excitement to the Test arena, turning every match into an exciting contest as a step towards the coveted world champion title. This year, the winner of the WTC Final 2025 shall receive a whooping prize money of 3.6 million US Dollars, which is significantly twice the amount offered in the previous. The runner up will receive, 2.16 million US Dollars, which is also a massive sum in its own right. The penultimate match of the series will be played at Lord’s in London, set to commence from 11th June 2025.

Two powerhouse teams, Australia and South Africa will go head-to-head, with live showcase available on Star Sports and JioHotsar app. The last test match held at his ground was played in September 2024 where Joe Root slammed his 34th Test century to ensure a sealed victory against Sri Lanka.

As far as both the playing sides are concerned, this time around Temba Bavuma led Proteas side would try their best to capitalize on the prestigious opportunity and play to their strengths. They had a brilliant run in the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, and also played exceptional cricket in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as the favourites to win but unfortunately lost against New Zealand. The side does look balanced, prepared and confident to take on the mighty Australians and lift the trophy they have eyed for in this two-year cycle.

In the cricket fraternity, a rather colloquial saying is when stakes are high, events are big and an over-arching finale match approaches closer, one team that certainly knows how to win trophies is Australia. There is an unwavering resilience the yellow army brings to the table, with an effortless ability to absorb pressure and execute their plans flawlessly. As the defending champions of the WTC 2023 championship, their team certainly looks edgier and abreast to clinch this victory, simply for the players in their arsenal this time around.

The much-awaited final will be played at the OG home of cricket, Lord’s Ground situated in London, from June 11 onwards, with Temba Bavuma leading the South African team and Pat Cummins as the skipper for the Team Australia. In the previous two editions of the World Test Championship, the ICC organized zenith event, the 2021 final was claimed by the Kiwis, New Zealand and the 2023 victory went in the favour of Australia, making them the defending champions for the current cycle.
