Karur Stampede: 40 Dead at Vijay’s TVK Rally, Blame Game Intensifies

The tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur has triggered a wave of political blame and counter-allegations.

In a fatal piece of news, at least 40 people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured in the incident, which has now snowballed into a major controversy in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

According to the Tamil Nadu police, the chaos unfolded due to TVK’s lack of proper crowd management. Officials stated that Vijay arrived nearly three hours late to the Karur rally, following an earlier event in Namakkal. Thousands of supporters had been waiting since morning, leading to restlessness. The crowd, initially expected to be 10,000, swelled to nearly 25,000.

Police also highlighted that the party failed to make adequate arrangements such as drinking water and basic facilities, while not adhering to the conditions laid down during the rally’s approval. The Karur Town Police have booked TVK’s Karur (North) District Secretary Madhiazhagan, General Secretary Bussy Anand, and Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar. They have been charged under sections 105 (culpable homicide), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), and 125 (endangering life of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Post-mortem examinations of the victims were conducted, and the bodies were handed over to families on Sunday. Three of the injured remain in critical condition and are being treated at Karur Government Hospital.

TVK Alleges Political Conspiracy

In response, TVK’s legal counsel, S. Arivazhagan, has alleged a political conspiracy behind the tragedy. He claimed that the post-mortems were conducted in haste without proper identification of victims. Arivazhagan demanded either a court-monitored investigation or a probe by an independent agency, accusing both the Tamil Nadu government and the state police of mishandling the situation.

A petition was also filed by rally attendee N. Senthil Kannan, who sustained injuries, seeking a temporary ban on TVK rallies until inquiries into the stampede are completed.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the victims’ families in Karur, calling it an unprecedented tragedy in the state’s political history. “Never before have so many lives been lost at a political event in Tamil Nadu. Such a tragedy should never happen again,” he said. Stalin announced an ex-gratia payment of INR 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and INR 1 lakh to each injured person.

Meanwhile, Karnataka BJP leader and MLC Chalavadi Narayanaswamy termed the incident “a complete failure of both the state government and Vijay’s party.”

Probe Committee Appointed

To determine accountability, CM Stalin has appointed retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to lead an inquiry into the incident. The committee is expected to submit its findings soon, which may shape the future political narrative in Tamil Nadu and decide whether the tragedy was a result of negligence or deeper political undercurrents.

As the probe unfolds, the Karur stampede has already cast a shadow over Vijay’s political journey, raising questions about leadership, crowd safety, and the volatile mix of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu. The cases of political rallies turning into grounds of mayhem, chaos and stampede have become a frequent phenomenon in recent times, with government measures
