India Invites Canada’s PM Mark Carney to AI Impact Summit 2025 in New Delhi

India has formally extended an invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the AI Impact Summit 2025, scheduled to be held in New Delhi in February next year.

The high-profile global event, hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will focus on shaping the future of artificial intelligence through cooperation, innovation, and responsible governance.

According to three officials’ familiar with the matter, the invitation was officially dispatched to Ottawa, and India is hopeful that Prime Minister Carney will accept it. The sources noted that AI is among the top priorities of the Canadian government, which has even established a dedicated ministerial portfolio for artificial intelligence.

If Carney attends the event, it will mark his first visit to India since taking office in March 2025, signaling a potential turning point in India-Canada relations, which have been cautiously improving after a period of diplomatic strain.

While the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office has yet to confirm participation, officials suggested that a formal response may take some time. In the meantime, there may be other opportunities for the two leaders to meet on the sidelines of major international events — including the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia later this month and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa in November.

The AI Impact Summit 2025 is expected to bring together world leaders, technology innovators, and policymakers to discuss AI governance, ethics, and global collaboration. Beyond the multilateral agenda, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with key participating leaders, strengthening India’s position as a global hub for AI and digital diplomacy.

The invitation to Carney comes as part of a broader effort to reset India-Canada ties, following months of quiet diplomacy since Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau. The breakthrough moment came during Modi and Carney’s first bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June 2025, where both leaders agreed to rebuild trust and explore new avenues for cooperation.

Furthering that engagement, Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand is scheduled to visit New Delhi and Mumbai in the forthcoming week, where she will hold discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other Indian officials. Several additional ministerial-level meetings are also being planned in the coming months, marking steady progress in the normalization of bilateral relations.
