NHAI Deploys Advanced 3D Laser Vehicles to Detect Road Defects

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a major technology-driven initiative to enhance the quality, safety, and maintenance of India’s National Highways.

The authority will deploy advanced Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) equipped with cutting-edge sensors and data acquisition systems to identify road defects such as potholes, surface cracks, and uneven patches across 23 States, covering a total length of more than 20,933 km.

Announced through an official Press Information Bureau (PIB) release on October 22, this initiative marks a significant milestone in India’s transition toward AI-based highway management. The data-driven approach will help the NHAI take timely corrective actions and improve long-term planning and infrastructure management.

Automated Road Condition Surveys Using 3D Laser Technology

The Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) system will employ 3D laser-based scanning technology, allowing for highly precise data collection on pavement and road surface conditions. These vehicles will operate without any human intervention, relying instead on high-resolution 360-degree cameras, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), and Distance Measuring Indicators (DMI). Together, these systems can automatically detect and record every crack, pothole, or defect on the road surface.

Each NSV is also integrated with advanced data acquisition and processing software, ensuring the captured information is accurate and comprehensive. The surveys will be conducted for all two-, four-, six-, and eight-lane highway projects before the commencement of work and then repeated every six months. This regular monitoring cycle ensures that any emerging issues can be quickly identified and addressed, preventing deterioration and improving safety for commuters.

Data Analysis Through AI-Based Platforms

Once the data is collected, it will be uploaded to NHAI’s AI-powered Data Lake portal, where a dedicated team of experts will analyze it to generate actionable insights. The analysis will identify deficiencies in the road network and recommend corrective maintenance actions, improving the durability and serviceability of national highways.

The processed data will also be archived in the Road Asset Management System (RAMS) as per Government of India’s technical guidelines. This will help maintain a long-term repository of highway condition data, which can be used for predictive maintenance, infrastructure planning, and policy formulation.

Enhancing Safety, Efficiency, and Accountability

With the deployment of NSVs, NHAI aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in highway management. The move represents a shift from manual inspections to automated, technology-based road assessment, reducing the risk of human error and increasing the speed of evaluation.

Accurate data on surface defects will allow engineers and contractors to prioritize maintenance tasks effectively, helping to minimize road accidents, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and improve travel comfort. The initiative is also aligned with the government’s broader Digital India and Smart Infrastructure goals, promoting the use of AI, automation, and data analytics in public infrastructure projects.

Public and Environmental Benefits

Beyond maintenance efficiency, this initiative is expected to contribute to fuel efficiency and lower emissions by maintaining smoother roads, reducing the frequency of braking and acceleration. Well-maintained highways will also boost logistics performance, benefiting industries and the economy at large.

NHAI has already invited bids from qualified companies with proven expertise in data acquisition, AI analysis, and pavement management systems to execute this large-scale project.

By embracing these advanced tools, NHAI is setting a new benchmark in data-driven highway maintenance and management. The move underscores India’s commitment to building safer, smarter, and more sustainable roads for the future.
