Rockstar Shows Detailed GTA 6 Gameplay in New Extended Look

Rockstar Games unveiled a 26‑minute video titled Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. Captured entirely on the PlayStation 5 version of the title, the footage moves beyond traditional cinematic teasers to demonstrate how the two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, will interact, fight, drive and explore the fictional state of Leonida.

Gameplay and Character Dynamics

The extended look places the partnership between Jason and Lucia at the centre of the experience. Jason is described as a former Army soldier who grew up around crime and later worked with drug runners in the Keys. Lucia, recently released from prison, is seeking a fresh start. Their stories converge as the video repeatedly shows them travelling together, sharing tasks and confronting danger side by side.

One of the most striking gameplay moments features character switching during a single encounter. In a firefight, Lucia pilots a vehicle while Jason provides covering fire, illustrating that switching is not merely a narrative device but a tactical option that can be employed within the same mission. The opening sequence follows the duo entering an apartment building to retrieve a package for a character named Boobie Ike. What begins as a routine job quickly escalates into a shootout, police arrival and a high‑speed escape, allowing Rockstar to showcase movement, gunplay, cover mechanics, cooperative actions, driving and police pursuits in a single, continuous segment.

Beyond combat, the video also captures quieter moments. The protagonists are seen at home, preparing for meetings, and gathering with their criminal circle on a rooftop. Crowds move through streets, nightlife venues stay busy, and everyday details such as traffic, businesses and animals persist while the characters navigate the world. Even a small interaction with a dog inside an apartment—offering options to pet, scold or study—highlights Rockstar’s emphasis on environmental richness.

The Expansive World of Leonida

While Vice City remains a recognizable landmark, the extended look makes clear that Leonida—a fictional version of Florida—extends far beyond the urban core. The map includes beaches, highways, rural roads, swamps, the Keys, industrial zones, affluent neighbourhoods, smaller towns, countryside and extensive waterways. This variety is emphasized once the video leaves the streets.

Rockstar demonstrates a range of water‑based activities: swimming, boating, jet‑skiing, scuba diving, underwater exploration, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and air‑boat travel. One sequence follows an air‑boat gliding through a swamp, while another plunges beneath the water’s surface to showcase underwater visibility.

Land‑based recreation is equally diverse. The montage features basketball, dirt biking, scooter riding, base jumping, parachuting, street racing, car meets, shooting‑range drills, weightlifting, wrestling, clubbing, dancing and various animal interactions. Although the depth of each activity is not fully explained, their presence signals a broad ambition for player freedom between mission objectives.

Police Encounters and Side Activities

Police mechanics receive particular attention. The footage suggests that clothing, appearance and vehicle choice may influence how law enforcement identifies suspects. Changing vehicles, hiding or altering a character’s look appears to affect escape possibilities, and masks or disguises are shown as viable tools. However, Rockstar does not provide a detailed technical breakdown of the wanted system, leaving the exact impact of these factors uncertain.

Criminal pursuits remain central to the presentation. Jason and Lucia are depicted conducting package collections, robberies, deliveries, vehicle thefts, meetings and high‑speed getaways. A diner robbery, previously seen in leaked material from 2022, reappears with fully realised character models, lighting, environments and animation, underscoring Rockstar’s continued focus on heist‑style gameplay.

Combat is portrayed in multiple contexts: shooting from cover, close‑quarters engagements, firing from moving vehicles and hand‑to‑hand fighting. In one close‑quarters scene, Lucia dodges attacks and uses her shoe as an improvised weapon, adding a tactile, physical dimension to the combat showcase.

Release Details and Technical Notes

Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19, 2026. Confirmed platforms include PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. No PC version has been announced at this time.

Visually, the extended look highlights detailed facial animation, hair, clothing, vehicle interiors, water, vegetation, lighting, crowds and environmental animation. Rockstar notes that the footage was captured entirely in‑game on a PlayStation 5 console, but the presentation does not disclose resolution, frame‑rate options or other performance metrics.

Multiplayer aspects such as GTA Online remain largely unaddressed. The video focuses on single‑player content featuring Jason, Lucia and the broader Leonida environment, offering no concrete information about multiplayer progression, businesses, monetisation or cross‑platform support.

Overall, the extended look paints a picture of a world that extends far beyond the next mission marker. Whether it is a basketball court, a swamp traversed by an air‑boat, a crowded downtown street, an underwater dive or a simple decision to interact with a dog, Rockstar appears to be positioning Leonida as a living, breathing backdrop that continues to offer activities and interactions long after the main story’s climax.
