BMW launches limited‑run M2 xDrive Turbo Edition in India

BMW India announced that reservations are now being accepted for a new, limited‑edition version of the M2 sports coupe – the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition. The model is positioned as a tribute to the 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo, blending historic cues with modern performance technology. Allocation will be on a first‑come, first‑served basis and the company has indicated that pricing will be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Performance and powertrain

The Turbo Edition is powered by a 3.0‑litre, six‑cylinder turbo‑charged petrol engine that delivers 480 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive all‑wheel‑drive system and an eight‑speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox. BMW claims the drivetrain enables the coupe to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, a margin of 0.3 seconds quicker than the rear‑wheel‑drive M2.

The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Buyers who elect the optional M Driver’s Package can raise the limiter to 285 km/h, providing an additional performance envelope for those who seek higher velocity.

Design and styling details

Exterior styling draws heavily from the original 2002 Turbo. The body is finished in Alpine White and features hand‑painted BMW Motorsport stripes that echo one of the two paint options available on the 1973 model. A blacked‑out power dome sits on the bonnet, while a bespoke “Turbo” badge is positioned beneath the M2 badge. M‑styled stripes run across the bonnet, reinforcing the model’s motorsport lineage.

Carbon‑fibre components are prominent, with a roof, tailgate and rear spoiler all constructed from the lightweight material. Wheel options include 19‑inch forged alloy wheels at the front and 20‑inch forged wheels at the rear, both finished in a Gold Bronze colour. The wheel sizes and finishes are intended to accentuate the car’s aggressive stance while retaining the overall silhouette of the standard M2.

Inside, the cabin receives a suite of carbon‑fibre upgrades. Bucket seats are wrapped in carbon‑fibre frames, and the steering wheel is upholstered in Alcantara. Additional carbon‑fibre trim pieces are scattered throughout the interior, and an exclusive “Turbo” badge is integrated into the centre cup‑holder cover. Several of these carbon‑fibre elements are also available as standard on the BMW M2 CS, which is sold in the Indian market.

Heritage inspiration and market positioning

The M2 xDrive Turbo Edition pays homage to the BMW 2002 Turbo, introduced in 1973 as the first series‑production passenger car equipped with a turbocharger. The original 2002 Turbo employed a 2.0‑litre engine that produced 170 hp, reached a top speed of 211 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 7 seconds – impressive figures for its era. One of its most recognisable features was reversed “Turbo” lettering on the front, designed to appear correctly in the rear‑view mirror of a following vehicle, signalling a fast‑approaching car. BMW has revived this reversed lettering on the new edition, pairing it with the Alpine White paint and Motorsport stripes that were characteristic of the classic model.

This special edition is the second M2 variant to incorporate the xDrive system. The first was the 100 Jahre Nürburgring Edition, which also saw limited production and is currently accepting bookings. By offering the Turbo Edition alongside the Nürburgring model, BMW expands its portfolio of high‑performance, all‑wheel‑drive M2s for Indian customers seeking both heritage flair and modern traction capabilities.

While the exact price has not yet been announced, BMW has confirmed that the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition will be sold in limited numbers. Prospective buyers are encouraged to place reservations promptly, as allocations will be handled on a first‑come, first‑served basis. The combination of a 480 hp turbo‑six, all‑wheel‑drive traction, carbon‑fibre accents and historic styling cues positions the Turbo Edition as a niche yet compelling option within the compact luxury‑coupe segment in India.

Overall, the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition underscores BMW’s strategy of leveraging its rich motorsport and heritage archives to create exclusive, performance‑focused models for discerning markets. With bookings now open, the model is set to add a distinctive chapter to the M2 lineage, blending the legacy of the 2002 Turbo with contemporary engineering and design.
