India’s ODI squad for New Zealand tour to be named within days, BCCI says

India’s five‑match One Day International (ODI) series in New Zealand is set to receive its final squad list within the next two to three days, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told the Times of India on Wednesday. Saikia confirmed that the board will move quickly to name the players who will travel for the series that begins on November 4 in Auckland.

Selection timeline and upcoming fixtures

The selection process is occurring against a packed international calendar. The BCCI’s interim selection committee, chaired by former spinner Pragyan Ojha, has already announced the 20‑man squad for the five‑match T20 International series that kicks off on October 22 in New Zealand. The ODI series follows a month later, with the first match scheduled for November 4 at Eden Park, Auckland, and the final game slated for November 15 in Tauranga.

In parallel, the board is preparing for a two‑Test series that will begin in Wellington on November 19. Fast‑bowling all‑rounders Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana are slated to undergo Return‑to‑Play (RTP) assessments on either October 24 or October 26 at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Their fitness results are expected to influence the composition of the Test squad, which will be announced after the RTP tests.

Both the men’s and women’s Indian teams will be honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for securing gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. The ceremony underscores the broader context in which the cricketing selections are taking place, highlighting the national importance placed on recent sporting achievements.

Potential newcomers and injury updates

Among the players under close scrutiny is 23‑year‑old Mumbai seam‑bowling all‑rounder Suryansh Shedge. Shedge has emerged as a strong candidate for his maiden ODI call‑up after delivering notable performances in the recently concluded List A series against Australia A in Puducherry. In that series, he claimed four wickets for 40 runs and then top‑scored with 66 runs in the decisive one‑day match, showcasing both his bowling and batting capabilities.

Shedge’s resurgence follows a hamstring injury that kept him out of competitive cricket for several weeks. He returned to the field by replacing the senior all‑rounder Hardik Pandya, who remains sidelined due to a series of injuries that have limited his availability. Pandya’s prolonged absence has opened a window for emerging talent, and the board appears to be weighing Shedge against other options such as seam‑bowling all‑rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been identified as Pandya’s next‑best alternative.

In addition to Shedge’s prospects, the upcoming Ranji Trophy schedule provides further context for player assessment. Shedge is set to join the Mumbai side for its second match of the 2026‑27 Ranji Trophy season, a game against Himachal Pradesh that begins on October 18 in Bilaspur. Performances in that domestic fixture could prove decisive in the final selection decision for the New Zealand ODI tour.

The board’s strategy also appears to involve a ‘split squad’ approach for the ODI series. With the Test series commencing shortly after the ODIs, several regular Indian players may be earmarked for red‑ball preparation to strengthen India’s position in the World Test Championship. This tactical split could see a blend of established limited‑overs specialists and fringe players like Shedge featuring in the final ODI roster.

Administrative updates and junior selection panel

Beyond the playing staff, the BCCI is also addressing its administrative framework. The Cricket Advisory Committee, a two‑member panel comprising former Indian batsmen Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, conducted Zoom interviews on Tuesday with candidates for the junior selection committee. The interviews are part of a broader effort to refresh the board’s talent‑identification mechanisms at the youth level.

Pragyan Ojha, who assumed the role of interim chairman of the national selection committee after the BCCI’s directive, met with India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The meeting, which coincided with Gambhir’s 45th birthday, marked Ojha’s first face‑to‑face interaction with the senior team’s leadership since his appointment.

Overall, the next few days are poised to be decisive for India’s cricketing plans. The final ODI squad will be announced shortly after the RTP tests for Krishna and Rana, while the Test squad is expected to follow based on those fitness outcomes. The selections will reflect a balance between current form, injury status, and the strategic need to allocate resources between the limited‑overs and red‑ball formats as India prepares for crucial international engagements.
