World Health Organization Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva on Wednesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo will only be contained if every chain of transmission is identified and broken. He warned that until those chains are stopped, the epidemic “will continue to pose a threat to [the] DRC, its neighbours and the region as a whole.”
Scale of the outbreak
Official government data released on Wednesday indicated that more than 3,000 people have died from Ebola in the DRC, making this the fastest‑growing, deadliest and largest outbreak the country has ever faced. The United States Centers for Disease Control noted that response efforts are falling short of established targets, with up to 80 percent of new cases occurring outside known contacts. This high proportion of unidentified infections underscores the difficulty of tracing transmission pathways.
Barriers to containment
The response is being hampered by a combination of conflict in the nation’s mineral‑rich regions, inadequate infrastructure, and strikes by unpaid healthcare workers. Cultural practices, particularly traditional burial rites, have also contributed to the virus’s spread. Tedros said it remains unclear how many individuals were exposed to the virus before they died, adding, “That means there are chains of transmission we don’t know about.” A DRC official speaking to Reuters confirmed that schools in the hardest‑hit zones reopened this week, despite earlier plans for remote learning that were abandoned because authorities feared remote instruction would pose a greater risk to students than the disease itself.
Funding gap and response
Financial resources for the response are severely lacking. The WHO is working to close a funding gap of more than $1 billion, a shortfall that has been exacerbated by contracted humanitarian assistance budgets and competing global priorities. Tedros emphasized the urgency, stating, “We know that we are making this request at a time when financing for humanitarian assistance has contracted, and when there are many other competing priorities. But as we know from previous Ebola outbreaks, we can control this epidemic if we choose to.”
The viral strain driving the current surge is identified as Bundibugyo, for which no approved treatment or vaccine exists. Clinical trials for candidate vaccines are underway, with plans to deploy an effective jab immediately should trials prove successful.
As the outbreak continues to threaten the DRC and neighboring regions, the WHO’s call for comprehensive contact tracing, increased funding, and rapid vaccine deployment remains central to any effort to halt the spread of Ebola.
