Donald Trump – Elon Musk Drama Goes Public; Friends turn Foes due to ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’

Elon Musk, the Tesla-owner and business tycoon has come under media spotlight for his alleged public fallout with the US President Donald Trump. The reason for this public spat is the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ –also termed as the OBBA Act, is essentially a proposed legislative act by the Republican government which perfectly encapsulates Trump’s policy agenda and campaign promises for US-based entrepreneurs and small-business owners, while increasing funds into border security and expanding defence spending.

The proposed bill has been heavily criticized by billionaire Elon Musk, who has had a monumental fallout with the US President., citing the expression ‘Kill the Bill’ to revolt against Trump’s ludicrous ideology. His One Big Beautiful Bill, recently passed and approved by the House of Representatives through a whisker margin contains a provision that could change global remittance flows, and India as the world’s leading recipient of remittances could be impacted the most.

This bill includes a proposed 3.5 per cent tax on all outbound remittance transfers, which was originally fixed at 5 per cent, but was later revised under pressure. This clause covers funds transferred from the United States to recipients abroad by foreign workers, including legal residents – green card holders and temporary visa workers like H-1B employees.

However, this particular clause has been heavily criticized by billionaire and ostentatious business baron, Elon Musk, who owns Tesla, X, SpaceX and the previous head of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) in Trump’s Republican cabinet. “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both,” the Tesla and SpaceX chief said recently.

Bill’s Impact on India

According to the World Bank and Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India received approximately US $129 billion in remittances in 2024 alone. The figure is almost as much as the annual budgets of Pakistan (US $67 billion) and Bangladesh (US $68 billion) combined. The largest portion of this sum originates from Indian workers in the United States. The proposed new tax could drain billions from the pool of funds that support millions of households in India.

  • In the last decade, India’s overall remittances have seen a significant growth by over 56%. Between 2014 to 2024, India has received nearly US $1 trillion dollars alone in remittances.
  • The stated tax of 3.5% could disproportionately affect states where remittance flows are critical to household consumption – Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar as the top recipients.
  • In the migrant labor population portion, major share of people resides in the developed nations of United States and United Kingdom, where Indian professionals dominate the high-earning sectors like IT, healthcare, finance, and engineering.

Political Context

Elon Musk has voiced his opinions in public via media address on June 5, terming the contents of the Big Beautiful Bill illogical, with the tech mogul and Republican financier launching an extraordinary social media attack on the president, which ended with him accusing President Trump of being named in the so-called “Epstein files” – confidential documents related to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Donald Trump has accused Elon Musk of losing his mind as the dramatic breakdown between arguably USA’s most powerful person and the world’s richest person has now escalated into a full-blown feud that could have drastic political and economic consequences. Trump has opined of not being particularly interested in reconciling with Musk, who were near-constant companions during the later stages of the Donald Trump’s campaign in 2024.

Musk has suggested starting a new political party, one that actually represents the 80% of the middle-level population and given his staggering wealth, he could possibly pump millions into next year’s midterm elections, potentially influencing races across the country. Though he has apparently offered an olive branch to President Donald Trump, the latter seems to be in on mood to forgive the remarks made and mend the fallout.

With the current volatility between Musk and Trump, two men known for their large egos and unpredictable behaviour, their relationship could not invariably last long, making a plausible reconciliation seeming highly unlikely as of now.
