In a historic landmark achievement, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated world’s highest bridge in Chenab, aims for continual infrastructural development in Jammu & Kashmir.

In the latest turn of events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, June 6 inaugurated the Chenab railway bridge, the world’s highest rail bridge, to take a step further in India’s infrastructural journey. After landing at the Air Force station in Udhampur, PM Modi flew to the Chenab bridge site to formally inaugurate the wonder marvel. This visit marked Prime Minister’s first trip to Jammu and Kashmir following the Operation Sindoor counterstrike, in wake of April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Along with the CM Omar Abdullah, PM Modi also viewed an exhibition on the much-hyped Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

During this impending visit, PM Modi interacted with engineers, workers, and officials who were involved in the execution of the ambitious project that connects the scenic state of Kashmir with the rest of India by railways. The iconic structure built across the Chenab River, is part of the esteemed USBRL project, and will certainly enhance the tourism drive in the state of J&K, which faces turbulence quite often.

Following the inauguration of the Chenab railway bridge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also set to inaugurate the Anji bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, further elevating connectivity in the region. Along with these bridges, two Vande Bharat Express trains between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar will be inaugurated, to complete the full 272-km USBRL stretch. The interesting fact is that the world’s highest railway arch bridge is 359 metres above the riverbed and 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower.

The USBRL project has been built at an estimated cost of INR 43,780 crore, features 36 tunnels stretching 119 km and 943 bridges. It will offer an all-weather rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of India. The completion of this mega project will prove to be a pivotal point to facilitate regional development and national integration. This infrastructural development will transform mobility, bring prosperity and improve the quality of life for the people of Kashmir.

Focus on Infrastructure

To ease movement in border regions, PM Modi will also inaugurate multiple road and flyover projects. These include the Rafiabad-Kupwara road on NH-701, the Shopian bypass on NH-444, and flyovers at Sangrama and Bemina junctions in Srinagar. In his official address, he also paid a heartfelt tribute to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony ride operator who was among those killed in the attack. The Prime Minister applauded the people of Jammu and Kashmir on their spontaneous protests over the terror attack, and the determination displayed during unprecedented times.
