His visit comes after a period of friction between New Delhi and Ottawa, triggered by alleged Canadian allegations that Indian agents were involved in the killing of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in 2023.

At the Summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organizations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues. The severe civil disturbance and terrorism strikes between Israel and Iran will also be a major agenda for discussion, given that US President Donald Trump has exited the G7 Summit early, to initiate mediation talks and curb the intensifying counter strikes, which have entered Day 5 of the crisis.

What is the G7 Summit?

For the unversed, G7 stands for a collective union for the leaders of the seven most powerful nations across the world – United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, France, Italy, United Kingdom. The first ever summit took place in 1975 in Rambouillet, France. Back then, it was known as the G6 meeting, as Canada did not become a member until the following year.

Canada is hosting this year’s G7 meeting – it’s the seventh time it has assumed the presidency of the group. Besides leaders of the G7 countries and the EU, which is also represented at the summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited several heads of state from non-G7 countries as guests.

For the 51st edition, the current one, these powerful developed countries will be holding three days of intense discussions. The unfolding of Middle Eastern crisis will take the top-spot while the backdrop of aggressive trade tariffs will also be an important round-table discussion context.
