The Union Cabinet chaired by country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, on July 1. This is a landmark initiative aimed at ‘reshaping the country’s sporting landscape and empowering citizens through sports’ – which is the foundation for a healthy living.
The Union Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the introduction of the NSP 2025 at a press conference in New Delhi,
The new policy supersedes the existing National Sports Policy, 2001 after a long period of over two decades. The revamped policy lays out a visionary and strategic roadmap to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse and a strong contender for excellence at international sporting events, as India eyes grabbing the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The NSP 2025 is the conscious outcome of extensive consultations involving various Union Ministries, NITI Aayog, State Governments, National Sports Federations (NSFs), athletes, domain experts and public stakeholders. The policy is anchored on five key pillars, listed below.
- Excellence on Global Stage
- Sports for Economic Development
- Sports for Social Development
- Sports as a People’s Movement
- Integration with Education (NEP 2020)
Sports as a catalyst to promote social development looks at engaging the Indian diaspora through sports – cultivating the culture of picking at least one sport as an individual and following it as a regular practice to develop a sporting mindset.
Sports as a realm teaches immensely, shaping the personality of an athlete, imbibing essential life values while promoting health and fitness along the way.
- To realize its listed objectives, the National Sports Policy, NSP 2025 lays down a comprehensive implementation strategy encompassing six preliminary facets that will work simultaneously and in mutual conjunction at all times.
- Governance – The preliminary dimension involves creating a robust regulatory framework for complete sports governance, including the legal structure to maintain it.
- Private Sector Funding – The next area involves receiving sufficient monetary support from the private sector with an innovative financing mechanism and enhanced private sector participation through PPPs and CSR initiatives.
- Holistic Government Intervention – The policy calls for integration of sports related promotional activities into government schemes, and programs, across all Ministries and Departments to achieve a realistic impact.
- Technology & Innovation – One of the main focus areas is leveraging advanced technologies, including AI and data analytics for performance tracking, research, and seamless program implementation.
- National Monitoring Framework – This dimension looks to create a national uniform framework with well-defined benchmarks, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and time-bound targets to keep a strict check on the progress being made.
- Blueprint for States – Last but not the least, the NSP 2025 will look to serve as a model for Indian states and union territories, encouraging them to formulate their own policies in alignment with national objectives, to ensure the goal of ‘one nation’ is achieved.
