Marking a remarkable milestone in Bihar’s political landscape, Janata Dal (United) President Nitish Kumar was sworn in as Chief Minister for a record tenth term on November 20, at Patna’s iconic Gandhi Maidan.
The grand ceremony witnessed the induction of 18 cabinet ministers and two deputy chief ministers, solidifying the National Democratic Alliance’s renewed mandate in the state. Prominent leaders who were administered the oath included Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Dilip Jaiswal, and Mangal Pandey.
Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha—both senior BJP leaders—took charge as the new Deputy Chief Ministers. Nitish Kumar had earlier submitted his resignation to Governor as the current term of the Bihar Assembly was set to expire on November 22. This procedural step paved the way for the formation of the 18th Bihar Assembly, which officially begins functioning following the oath-taking of the Chief Minister and his council of ministers.
The Bihar Elections 2025 swearing-in event drew significant national attention, with top leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president JP Nadda in attendance. Chief Ministers from several states—including Haryana’s Nayab Singh Saini, Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Nagaland’s Neiphiu Rio – also graced the occasion, highlighting the political importance of the moment.

As the NDA returns to power, the alliance secured a thumping victory of 202 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged with 89 seats, while the JD(U) won 85 seats, reinforcing Nitish Kumar’s status as a central figure in the coalition. Other NDA partners performed strongly as well: Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured 19 seats, HAM(S) won 5, and RLM bagged 4 seats, collectively ensuring a stable majority.
Looking ahead, the newly constituted assembly will convene for a three-day session from November 26, during which the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be elected. Newly elected MLAs will also take their oaths during this session, officially setting the legislative process in motion for the new term.
