Indian Prime Minister Modi‘s visit to Ghana, the first in over 30 years, aims to strengthen ties and enhance cooperation in agriculture, education, and trade. He received Ghana’s highest civilian honour, dedicating it to the youth and the enduring friendship between the two nations.
“It is a matter of immense pride and honour for me to be conferred with Ghana’s highest honour… I express my deep gratitude to President Mahama, the Government of Ghana and the people of Ghana. I humbly accept this honour on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians,” PM Modi stated in his address.
The Prime Minister post his felicitation dedicated the award to the youth of both countries and their aspirations & bright future, the rich cultural diversity, traditions and the historic ties shared by the two communities across the global diaspora.
The proud moment came through on July 2, in Accra, Ghana, as the incumbent prime minister was conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, by Ghana’s President His Excellency John Mahama. The award came in recognition of his ‘distinguished’ statesmanship and influential global leadership, the Union Ministry of External Affairs said in an official statement.
“This honour is also a responsibility, to keep working towards a stronger India-Ghana friendship. India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner”.
Interestingly, this momentous occasion marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in more than three decades. The trip aimed to strengthen India – Ghana ties and reaffirm the capital’s commitment to Africa and the Global South. President Mahama welcomed PM Modi and said the visit reflected the long-standing friendship the two countries mutually share.
During a joint press briefing with Ghanaian President John Mahama, PM Modi said India would expand its cooperation with Ghana extensively in key sectors which include agriculture, education, defence, healthcare and digital payments.
PM Modi also said that India plans to double trade agreements with Ghana within the next five years and offer its digital payments system, Bharat UPI, to boost the financial connectivity.
Noting that the shared democratic values and traditions of the two countries would continue to nurture their partnership deeply, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that this milestone award further solidifies the friendship between the two countries and places new responsibility on him to embrace coherent bilateral ties. Prime Minister affirmed that he was quite confident of his historic State Visit to Ghana imparting a new momentum to the new nations’ ties, a positive step towards future fortification.
