Two Decades After Pluto’s Demotion, the Planet Debate Rages On

In August 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) voted to reclassify Pluto from a planet to a dwarf planet, shrinking the solar system from nine planets to eight. The decision was prompted by the discovery of Eris, a Kuiper Belt object of comparable size, and led the IAU to adopt a three‑point definition of a planet: it must orbit the Sun, be massive enough to assume a round shape, and have cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Pluto failed the last criterion.

Origins of the controversy

Pluto was discovered in 1930 at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, fulfilling Percival Lowell’s earlier prediction of a “Planet X” that would explain irregularities in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. Subsequent measurements showed Pluto far too small to account for those irregularities, and a 1992 correction of Neptune’s mass eliminated the need for a ninth planet altogether.

The 2006 vote was sparked by Eris, found beyond Neptune in the Kuiper Belt. Eris’s mass exceeds Pluto’s, raising the question of whether both bodies should be called planets. The IAU’s new definition meant that any similar distant object would also be excluded, potentially leaving hundreds of dwarf planets on school wall charts.

Scientific arguments for and against reinstatement

Critics of the IAU definition argue that “orbit‑clearing” is an inconsistent metric. Laurel Kornfeld, a writer and amateur astronomer, notes that the same object could be a planet in one orbit but not in another, and that moving Earth to Pluto’s distance would prevent it from clearing its zone. Alan Stern, a planetary scientist, echoed this point, saying Earth would lose planetary status under the same rule.

Philip Metzger, director of the Stephen W. Hawking Centre for Microgravity Research at the University of Central Florida, called the definition “completely non‑useful in science.” He and other geophysical proponents contend that a body’s intrinsic properties—such as shape, geology, and composition—should determine planethood. The 2015 New Horizons flyby of Pluto revealed mountains, recent geological activity, and nitrogen‑ice hills, bolstering the geophysical camp’s claim that Pluto meets planetary criteria.

Opponents, including dynamicists, maintain that orbital context matters. Mike Brown, the discoverer of Eris and often dubbed “the man who killed Pluto,” argues that if Pluto were reinstated, the Moon would also qualify, which would upend long‑standing classifications. Paul Byrne, an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis, welcomes a broader definition, comparing the potential influx of new planets to the 1,025 official Pokémon species and noting that “the more the merrier.”

Public sentiment and political overtones

The campaign to restore Pluto’s status has largely been a U.S. phenomenon, according to Metzger, who links the reaction to national pride in the discovery. Kevin Schindler, a historian at Lowell Observatory, describes Pluto as “the underdog that so many people root for.”

Political voices have entered the fray as well. In April, Jared Isaacman, then NASA administrator under the Trump administration, testified before Congress that he favored rethinking Pluto’s classification, saying, “I am very much in the camp of Make Pluto a Planet Again.”

Critics of the original vote also question its procedural legitimacy. Metzger suggests that the IAU may not have followed required voting protocols, while Brown dismisses political motives, stating that only those unhappy with the outcome complained about the process.

For many educators, the debate matters because it shapes what children learn. Kornfeld warns that the 2006 decision “almost like a coup” has limited curriculum to eight planets, missing an opportunity to teach a “dynamic, chaotic cosmos.” Metzger agrees, calling the old view “reactionary” and urging a modern, inclusive definition.

As the 20th anniversary of Pluto’s demotion approaches, the scientific community remains split between geophysical and dynamical camps, and public advocacy shows no sign of waning. Whether another IAU vote will occur, and what definition it might adopt, continues to be an open question.
