On April 22, 2025, the Indian citizens had woken up to headlines filled with horror and grief, as 26 innocent civilians (25 Indian and 01 Nepali citizen) who were vacationing in the touristic region of Baisaran in Jammu & Kashmir along with their families, lost their lives because of the heinous terror attack carried out by militant organizations from Pakistan. The dreaded Pahalgam attack two weeks back took away not only the lives of people, but also left the entire nation shocked with this act of crime. The tears may have dried up, but the revenge filled emotions continued to remain alive in the hearts of people. As expected, this horrendous step was condemned by people from all walks of life and called for stringent measures to retaliate against the enemy forces. Days later, a series of tasks were undertaken by the Indian government, such as closure of international borders with Pakistan, indefinite suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and extradition of all Pakistan residents staying in the Indian states. Though these measures came across as a positive step to counter the killing of civilians by terrorist groups, it still seemed insufficient in comparison to the loss faced.

The nation once again woke up to an eye-opening news on May 7, as the Indian Armed Forces launched “Operation Sindoor,” a coordinated military campaign targeting nine carefully identified sites that belong to Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation served as a direct response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths predominantly Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, who claimed the complete responsibility for carrying out the attack. Numerous videos had gone viral online, showcasing the terrorists checking on each individual’s religion and mercilessly killing non-Muslim citizens to sensationalize and spread terror amongst the people who were there on a holiday. Operation Sindoor aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure associated with mainly three militant groups- Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen. The Indian military executed 24 precision missile strikes over a 25-minute period from 1:00 am to 1:30 am in the wee hours of May 7, by utilizing Rafale fighter jets equipped with the state-of-the-art SCALP missile system and AASM Hammer bombs. The targeted locations included nine base camps, that were circled based on intelligence reports received by Indian army chiefs. This entire operation was spearheaded by NSA Ajit Doval, along with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan and the respective heads of army, navy and air force. The key operational centres associated with the militant groups were:
- Bahawalpur
- Muridke
- Tehra Kalan
- Sialkot
- Bhimber
- Kotli
- Gulpur
- Muzaffarabad
- Barnala

Hours after the covert operation was carried out, Indian officials reported that the air strikes have resulted in the death of over 70 terrorists and more than 60 facing critical injuries, significantly impairing the functional capabilities of these groups. The entire mission was hailed as successful, victorious and purposeful, with Indian army applauding the secretly devised and meticulously detailed plan which resulted in the terror cramps getting burnt to ashes. In retaliation, Pakistan has condemned these strikes as an “act of war” and claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets, a news which has not been confirmed yet by the Indian authorities. The Pak media has also reported civilian casualties and damage to their infrastructure, which includes four mosques. However, these reported claims have not seen any official agreement by the Indian government yet. Subsequent to the airstrikes, Pakistan has initiated heavy artillery shelling along the Line of Control to counter control the attack from their end. The international community, including the United Nations, the United States, China, and Russia have expressed deep concern over the escalations and have urged both neighbouring countries to exercise restraint in order maintain regional stability.
As of now, the latest developments indicate a tense border situation outlined by a highly volatile environment, that has paved the way for heightened military alertness on both sides of the border. Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan are some of the Indian states that share a border with Pakistan, which have been put on high alert to monitor the present scenario remotely. There are ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and strive to bring the situation to a state of normalcy in the coming days. The high point of this entire operation encompasses two major features; the name “Operation Sindoor” – coined as a mark of tribute to the women who lost their husbands in the Pahalgam terror attack, and two women officers leading the briefing prior to the commencement of the operation. Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi took the baton and shared details of the Indian military’s precision strikes on the identified terror targets in Pakistan. Their powerful words signaled a strong and significant indication towards India’s zero tolerance policy to curb any act of cross-border terrorism.
In the words of Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, ‘the nation has demonstrated considerable restraint in its response. However, the India Armed Forces are fully prepared to respond to a Pakistani misadventure, if any, to escalate the situation’.
