Pakistan Retaliation in Vain, India Neutralizes the Air Defence System

A day after precision strikes against nine carefully identified terrorist target spots, as part of Operation Sindoor – a 25-minute strike period were carried out, the Indian armed forces on Thursday, May 8 have targeted the air defence radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Due to India’s action, the air defence system at Lahore has been neutralised, though an official confirmation is awaited. Operation Sindoor involved the usage of HAMMER smart bombs and SCALP missiles to that destroyed terrorist groups’ HQs and training camps, mainly the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed groups. As per Union Defence Minister, over 100 terrorists were killed in the air strikes.

Indian defence forces have negated Pakistan’s overnight attempts to escalate tension by targeting military installations in the northern and western parts of the country, approximately 15 different regions – including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Gujarat. Pakistani missiles and drones were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The response by Indian contingent targeted radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan, primarily Lahore and Sialkot. This military action against India comes a day after the Indian armed forces carried out strikes at four terrorist camps in Pakistan and five in Pak-occupied Kashmir, or PoK. The government said Indian forces responded by targeting and neutralising Pakistani Air Defence Radars in response to the attack on military facilities in Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, and other locations. Indian forces’ response, the government underlined this afternoon, was “in the same domain (and) with the same intensity” as the attacks launched by Pakistan. Pak forces used drones and missiles that were disabled by India’s air defence systems, which involved the HQ-9 – a long-range surface-to-air missile system of Chinese origin and is regarded as a crucial component of Pakistan’s multi-layered air defence network.  The Indian forces made use of Harpy drones to destroy Pak air defences, and subsequently Russia-manufactured S-400 Sudarshan Chakra Defence System to shoot down missiles aimed at the country’s cities. The defence ministry said in an official release that Pakistan has amplified the intensity of its unprovoked firing across the Line of Control, using Mortars and heavy calibre Artillery in northern areas of Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir, since Operation Sindoor was carried out yesterday.

In an attempt to prove other foreign countries that India has been responding to the continual attacks as a means to safeguard its land and people, and not engage in a deliberate war-like situation with Pakistan on purpose, debris from the destroyed drones and missiles is being collected. This will add to the volume of evidence supporting India’s charges that Pakistan supports cross-border terrorism targeting India, whether by financial funding or military training. Sixteen innocent lives have been lost, including three women and five children, due to Pakistani firing at the LOC border since last night. As a result, India has been compelled to respond fiercely to bring Mortar and Artillery fire from Pakistan to a complete halt. The Indian Armed Forces have been reiterating their commitment to non-escalation, provided it is respected by the Pakistani military counterparts too.

As far as the economic impact is concerned, trading at Pakistan Stock Exchange was halted as the KSE-100 index crashed over 6,000 points on May 8 morning, after India’s precision strikes. Investors have become highly concerned amidst the rising Indo-Pak tensions and unavoidable International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) scrutiny. The economic instability and volatility in the nation has made PSX, the stock exchange as the frontline affected party of the sudden geo-political disturbance.
